India has reached a new milestone in long-distance passenger transport with the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) issuing its first compliance certificate for a 15-metre multi-axle sleeper bus. The certification has been awarded to Synaty Automotive Pvt. Ltd. under the applicable provisions of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, marking the successful evaluation of one of the longest permissible bus-body configurations in the country’s passenger transport sector.
The vehicle has been certified under AIS-119 and AIS-153, regulatory standards covering important aspects of bus construction and passenger safety. The evaluation included requirements relating to structural integrity, emergency safety, fire protection, passenger accommodation, movement within the vehicle and travel comfort, making the certification particularly significant for the rapidly expanding intercity sleeper-coach market.
At 15 metres in length and using a multi-axle configuration, the bus provides operators with significantly greater passenger capacity than conventional coaches while retaining the stability and structural requirements necessary for long-distance operation. The full-sleeper configuration accommodates 42 berths, while a hybrid version can be configured with 21 berths and 42 seats, allowing operators to choose layouts suited to different route and passenger requirements.
Sleeper coaches have become an increasingly important part of India’s intercity transport network, particularly on overnight routes linking major cities and regional centres. Their growth, however, also places greater emphasis on vehicle construction standards because passengers spend long periods inside the vehicle and may be sleeping when an emergency occurs. Structural strength, accessible exits, fire protection and safe internal layouts consequently become especially important.
Certification of the 15-metre configuration demonstrates that Indian bus manufacturers are moving towards larger and more sophisticated vehicle architectures while meeting increasingly detailed safety requirements. It also reflects the development of domestic testing and homologation capabilities needed to evaluate new classes of commercial vehicles before they enter regular operation.
ICAT, based at Manesar in Haryana, provides testing, certification and homologation services to India’s automotive industry.
