The Indian Navy has inaugurated its premier Naval Sailing Node at Upper Lake, popularly known as Bhojtal, in Bhopal, marking an important step in expanding India’s watermanship training and competitive water-sports ecosystem. The facility was inaugurated on May 17, 2026, in a ceremony presided over by Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, Chief of the Naval Staff, in the presence of senior defence officials, civil administration representatives, NCC cadets and students.
The new sailing node is designed as a state-of-the-art training facility for the Indian Navy Sailing Team, as well as the Navy’s rowing, canoeing and kayaking teams. It will also be used by the National Cadet Corps, giving young cadets greater exposure to disciplined water-sports training and naval-style adventure activities.
The inauguration was accompanied by a ceremonial display on the waters of Bhojtal. More than 30 naval personnel from the Indian Naval Watermanship Training Centre, Visakhapatnam, along with members of the Navy’s rowing, kayaking and canoeing teams, presented a sail parade and water-sports demonstrations. The event underlined the Navy’s emphasis on watermanship not merely as a sport, but as a foundational skill linked to teamwork, endurance, confidence and operational culture.
For the Indian Navy, watermanship has long been an essential part of training. Sailing, rowing, kayaking and canoeing help naval personnel develop balance, discipline, physical fitness, coordination and comfort in the maritime environment. These skills also strengthen camaraderie and competitive spirit, both of which are central to naval life.
The Bhopal node also carries a strong Madhya Pradesh connection. According to the official release, 17 members of the 34-member Navy Sailing Team currently belong to Madhya Pradesh. By creating a premier training base at Bhojtal, the Navy hopes to encourage more young people from the state to take up competitive water sports and consider careers in the defence forces.
The initiative also fits into India’s broader push to build world-class sporting talent for major international competitions such as the Olympics and Asian Games. By combining military discipline, professional coaching, modern facilities and youth outreach, the Naval Sailing Node at Bhopal can become an important bridge between defence training and India’s competitive sports ambitions
