India has announced a fresh relief package for domestic airlines as turbulence in West Asia and rising global crude prices continue to push up aviation costs. In a significant move, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has ordered a 25% reduction in landing and parking charges for domestic flights, with immediate effect for a three-month period. The intervention comes after the government had already limited the pass-through of Aviation Turbine Fuel price increases for domestic carriers to 25%, despite a much steeper rise in global fuel costs. The broader objective is clear: ease pressure on airlines, prevent a sharp fare spiral for passengers, and keep domestic aviation stable during an exceptionally volatile global phase.
The reduction will apply across both major and non-major airports. For major airports, the Airports Economic Regulatory Authority has been directed to lower prevailing landing and parking tariffs by 25%, while the Airports Authority of India has been asked to extend the same benefit at its non-major airports. According to the Ministry, the measure is expected to cut airline expenses by about ₹400 crore over the three-month relief window. The government has also clarified that any temporary under-recovery suffered by airports will be adjusted during future tariff determinations, ensuring that airport operators remain financially protected even as airlines receive immediate support.
The relief package reflects a calibrated approach by the government as it tries to balance three competing priorities at once: airline viability, passenger affordability, and system-wide operational continuity. Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu said the effort is aimed at keeping flying convenient and affordable even as international disruptions continue to unsettle fuel markets and aviation networks. With ATF costs still elevated and geopolitical uncertainty persisting, the government has indicated it will continue monitoring the situation closely and may consider further steps if needed to sustain safe and affordable domestic air travel. IBEF also carried the development, while noting that its report was based on secondary research.
