HAL Signs Contract With KNDS for 126 THL-20 20 mm Turrets to Arm LCH Prachand Combat Helicopter Fleet

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited’s Light Combat Helicopter programme has secured a major component of its weapon system, with European defence group KNDS contracted to supply 126 THL-20 20 mm cannon turrets for the LCH Prachand fleet being produced for the Indian Armed Forces.

KNDS formally announced the selection on 17 September 2026, confirming that 126 newly manufactured THL-20 turrets will be supplied for integration with India’s new Light Combat Helicopters. The agreement gives the indigenous attack helicopter a proven nose-mounted cannon system optimised for helicopter operations.

THL-20 to Equip New LCH Prachand Fleet

The THL-20 is a lightweight and compact helicopter gun turret built around the 20M621 20 mm cannon. The weapon fires standard 20×102 mm ammunition and has been designed to combine comparatively low recoil with high firing accuracy, an important consideration for lightweight combat helicopters.

According to KNDS, the turret can be integrated with the helicopter’s sighting systems, allowing the weapon to be directed through the aircraft’s targeting architecture. The manufacturer describes the THL-20 as a derivative of the larger THL-30 turret used on the Tiger attack helicopter.

The THL-20 has previously been qualified on the IAR 330 helicopter and integrated with the Black Hawk, giving the system an established aviation integration history before its selection for Prachand.

Part of India’s 156-Helicopter LCH Programme

The turret procurement is connected with India’s major expansion of the LCH Prachand fleet. On 28 March 2025, the Ministry of Defence signed two contracts with HAL worth ₹62,700 crore, excluding taxes, for the production of 156 LCH Prachand helicopters.

Of these, 90 helicopters are intended for the Indian Army and 66 for the Indian Air Force. The contracts also cover training and associated equipment. Deliveries are scheduled to begin from the third year of the programme and continue over the following five years.

The order represents one of the largest indigenous military helicopter programmes undertaken in India and is intended to significantly expand the Army and Air Force attack-helicopter fleets.

A Cannon Designed for Close Combat

A nose-mounted cannon gives an attack helicopter a flexible weapon for engaging targets that may not justify the expenditure of guided missiles or rockets. Such a system can be employed against infantry positions, lightly protected vehicles and other battlefield targets while allowing the helicopter to rapidly redirect fire.

The THL-20’s relatively compact dimensions and low-recoil design are particularly relevant to Prachand, which was developed as a lightweight attack helicopter capable of operating in demanding high-altitude environments.

The turret’s integration with helicopter sighting systems is equally important. Rather than functioning merely as a fixed forward-firing gun, a turreted cannon can be directed towards targets independently of the helicopter’s exact flight direction within its permitted engagement envelope, improving flexibility during close-support missions.

Prachand Built for India’s High-Altitude Requirements

HAL developed the LCH Prachand following operational requirements for an attack helicopter capable of functioning effectively at high elevations, particularly along India’s mountainous northern frontiers.

The Ministry of Defence has stated that the helicopter is designed for operations at altitudes exceeding 5,000 metres and incorporates more than 65 per cent indigenous content. Around 250 Indian companies, most of them MSMEs, participate in the programme, which the government estimates supports more than 8,500 jobs.

Its relatively low weight, high-altitude performance and dedicated combat configuration distinguish Prachand from heavier attack helicopters and utility helicopters adapted for armed missions.

KNDS Expands Role in India’s Helicopter Armament Ecosystem

The latest order also deepens KNDS’s involvement in India’s aerial cannon and ammunition ecosystem. The company already supplies 20 mm and 30 mm ammunition for Indian military applications and has longstanding experience with aircraft-mounted cannon systems.

KNDS’s announcement specifically identifies the company as an established supplier of 20 mm and 30 mm ammunition to the Indian Army and Indian Air Force. With the THL-20 now selected for the new Prachand fleet, the company will occupy an important position in the helicopter’s gun armament chain.

The contract therefore represents more than the acquisition of an individual weapon component. It is another step towards completing the weapon and mission-system configuration required for serial production of India’s substantially expanded LCH fleet.

Strengthening Prachand’s Battlefield Firepower

The 126-turret procurement gives the new Prachand production programme a dedicated close-range cannon capability alongside the helicopter’s other planned guided and unguided weapons.

As HAL prepares to manufacture 156 additional LCH Prachand helicopters for the Army and Air Force, securing major weapon-system components such as the THL-20 will be essential to moving the programme from contracted production towards operational fleet expansion.

For India’s attack-helicopter capability, the combination of an indigenous high-altitude combat platform with a proven 20 mm turret represents another important step in building a substantially larger and more specialised rotary-wing combat force.
