Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever to Begin Three-Day India Visit on September 2

Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever will begin a three-day official visit to India on September 2, 2026, with bilateral talks, trade engagement and cooperation in strategic sectors expected to dominate the agenda.

During the visit, De Wever will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with the two leaders expected to review the full spectrum of India-Belgium relations. Their discussions will also cover regional and global developments of mutual interest, reflecting the growing engagement between India and Belgium as well as the wider India-European Union partnership.

Economic cooperation will be an important component of the visit. The Belgian Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at a business event connected with the proposed India-EU Free Trade Agreement, which has emerged as one of the most significant economic initiatives currently being negotiated between India and Europe.

De Wever will also travel to Mumbai, where he is expected to meet representatives and stakeholders from sectors including diamonds, ports and logistics. These areas have traditionally played an important role in commercial ties between India and Belgium, particularly through the longstanding connections between India’s diamond industry and Antwerp, one of the world’s major diamond trading centres.

According to India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the visit is expected to provide an opportunity to further strengthen the India-Belgium partnership across a range of sectors. Both countries are looking to expand cooperation in trade and investment, defence and security, advanced technology, renewable energy, connectivity and people-to-people relations.

The visit also comes at a time when India is seeking deeper economic and strategic engagement with European countries. Belgium’s position as a major European trade and logistics hub, as well as its role within the European Union, gives the bilateral relationship significance beyond purely commercial exchanges between the two countries.
