Indian Railways Introduces Kerala’s First Vistadome Coach on Scenic Punalur–Sengottai Route

The coach will operate on selected days during the trial period, allowing passengers to experience the scenic railway corridor while travelling between the two important pilgrimage destinations.

Indian Railways is set to introduce an Executive AC Vistadome coach on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express from October 22, 2026, bringing panoramic railway travel to one of the most scenic routes connecting Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The initiative will allow passengers to enjoy expansive views of the Western Ghats, including the picturesque Punalur–Sengottai mountain railway section and Aryankavu Pass.

Southern Railway announced the introduction on October 18, 2026, confirming that the special coach will operate on a temporary trial basis until January 16, 2027. The service will operate four days a week in each direction, offering tourists, families and railway enthusiasts an opportunity to experience the region’s natural beauty.

The introduction marks the first deployment of a Vistadome coach on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express and represents an important addition to Kerala’s railway tourism facilities.

Vistadome Coach to Operate on Madurai–Guruvayur Express

Southern Railway will attach one Executive AC Vistadome coach to Train No. 16327, operating from Madurai to Guruvayur, and Train No. 16328, operating in the opposite direction.

The coach will operate on selected days during the trial period, allowing passengers to experience the scenic railway corridor while travelling between the two important pilgrimage destinations.

According to Southern Railway’s announcement, the service will follow this schedule:

The temporary introduction will provide Southern Railway with an opportunity to assess passenger demand for premium sightseeing facilities on the route.

Panoramic Views of the Western Ghats and Aryankavu Pass

The principal attraction of the new Vistadome service is the Sengottai–Punalur railway section, which passes through the Western Ghats along the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.

The railway line crosses mountainous terrain, forested landscapes, valleys and historic railway infrastructure. The section around Aryankavu Pass offers particularly attractive views of the surrounding hills and natural scenery.

The route connects the Tamil Nadu town of Sengottai with Punalur in Kerala, passing through a landscape characterised by tropical vegetation, mountain slopes and railway engineering structures.

Southern Railway has highlighted the scenic beauty of the Sengottai Gap as a major attraction for passengers travelling in the Vistadome coach.

With its extensive glass panels, the coach will allow passengers to appreciate the landscape more fully than conventional railway accommodation.

Special Features of the Executive AC Vistadome Coach

Indian Railways developed Vistadome coaches to improve the passenger experience on routes passing through areas of exceptional natural beauty.

The coaches feature large panoramic glass windows and roof glazing, providing wider views of the surrounding landscape.

Rotatable seats allow passengers to adjust their seating position to observe scenery from different angles. The air-conditioned interiors also offer a comfortable environment for sightseeing journeys.

Vistadome coaches are designed primarily for leisure travel, combining modern passenger amenities with enhanced visibility of the natural surroundings.

Their introduction on scenic railway routes forms part of Indian Railways’ wider efforts to promote tourism through specialised passenger services.

Vistadome Ticket Prices and Advance Booking

Southern Railway has opened advance reservations for the Executive Vistadome service.

The railway has announced a basic fare starting at ₹515, while the fare for the complete Madurai–Guruvayur journey is ₹1,875.

Passengers can make reservations through the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) booking system, subject to seat availability.

The coach will operate as part of the regular Madurai–Guruvayur Express rather than as a separate tourist train. This arrangement allows passengers to experience Vistadome travel while using the existing railway service.

Revised Coach Composition of Madurai–Guruvayur Express

Southern Railway has also announced the revised coach composition following the introduction of the Vistadome facility.

The train will have one Executive AC Vistadome coach, one AC three-tier coach, two sleeper-class coaches and seven general second-class coaches.

The formation will also include one Divyangjan-friendly coach and one luggage-cum-brake van.

The addition provides a premium sightseeing option while retaining accommodation for passengers travelling in other classes.

New Opportunities for Tourism in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

The introduction of the Vistadome coach creates opportunities to promote railway tourism along the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border.

The Punalur–Sengottai route combines natural attractions with distinctive railway infrastructure, offering passengers an experience that extends beyond conventional transport.

The service also connects Madurai and Guruvayur, two destinations with considerable cultural and religious importance.

Madurai is renowned for the historic Meenakshi Amman Temple, while Guruvayur attracts large numbers of pilgrims visiting the Sri Krishna Temple.

The combination of pilgrimage destinations and scenic mountain travel creates opportunities for tourism operators, local businesses and hospitality establishments along the corridor.

The new service also offers an opportunity to introduce more travellers to the Western Ghats landscape and the region’s railway heritage.

Indian Railways Expands Scenic Rail Tourism

The introduction of the Vistadome coach on the Madurai–Guruvayur Express reflects Indian Railways’ growing emphasis on improving passenger experiences and promoting tourism through its existing railway network.

Specialised coaches allow travellers to experience India’s diverse landscapes while benefiting from the convenience of regular train services.

The Western Ghats railway corridor between Punalur and Sengottai provides a suitable setting for this initiative, combining remarkable natural scenery with historic engineering achievements.

Beginning October 22, 2026, the Executive AC Vistadome service will offer passengers a new way to explore one of South India’s most picturesque railway routes.

The initiative strengthens Kerala’s railway tourism potential while expanding opportunities for scenic travel between the two neighbouring states.
