India’s E-Commerce Platforms Record ₹24,000 Crore Festive Sales in Two Days as Meesho Reports 75% Surge in Orders

The developments demonstrate how India’s digital commerce industry is expanding beyond its traditional dependence on large cities and premium electronic products. Increasing participation from smaller towns, greater product accessibility and technology-driven shopping experiences are contributing to a broader online retail market.

India’s e-commerce industry has recorded a strong opening to the 2026 festive shopping season, with online marketplaces generating an estimated ₹24,000 crore in gross merchandise value (GMV) during the first two days of sales. According to Redseer Strategy Consultants, approximately 8–9 crore orders were placed across platforms including Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho, Ajio and other online marketplaces, reflecting growing consumer participation across the country.

The industry assessment, released on 11 October 2026 and widely reported on 12 October, indicates that between 6 crore and 6.5 crore consumers participated in the first two days. Mobile phones accounted for the largest share of sales by value, while electronics, household appliances, fashion and everyday consumer products contributed substantially to demand.

Meanwhile, Bengaluru-headquartered e-commerce company Meesho reported approximately 75% year-on-year growth in orders on the opening day of its Mega Blockbuster Sale 2026. The company announced its performance on 10 October and subsequently submitted the press release to the National Stock Exchange on 12 October. Its figures highlight the increasing importance of affordable online shopping, particularly among consumers and small businesses outside India’s metropolitan centres.

The developments demonstrate how India’s digital commerce industry is expanding beyond its traditional dependence on large cities and premium electronic products. Increasing participation from smaller towns, greater product accessibility and technology-driven shopping experiences are contributing to a broader online retail market.

India’s Online Marketplaces Generate ₹24,000 Crore in Two Days

Redseer Strategy Consultants estimated that India’s e-commerce platforms generated approximately ₹24,200 crore in gross merchandise value during the opening two days of festive sales.

The value represents nearly six times the industry’s normal daily sales rate, while the number of orders reached approximately 14 times the usual daily level.

Gross merchandise value measures the total value of products sold through an online marketplace before adjustments such as returns and cancellations. It should not be confused with the revenue earned by individual e-commerce companies.

The substantial increase in transactions demonstrates the importance of festive shopping periods for India’s online retail industry. Promotional campaigns, expanded product assortments and improved delivery infrastructure encourage consumers to concentrate purchases during major sales events.

Redseer Associate Partner Nikhil Dalal indicated that demand was extending beyond mobile phones into fashion, electronics and household appliances. The research also identified affordable fashion as an important contributor, particularly among consumers in Tier-II cities and smaller towns.

The industry estimates show that festive e-commerce growth increasingly depends on attracting a wider range of consumers rather than concentrating exclusively on high-value purchases.

Mobile Phones Lead Sales While Electronics and Fashion Expand

Mobile phones remained the largest product category by sales value during the opening two days of the festive season.

According to Redseer’s estimates, smartphones accounted for approximately 38–40% of total gross merchandise value, representing sales of ₹9,100–9,600 crore.

Consumer electronics contributed another 25–27%, equivalent to approximately ₹6,000–6,500 crore. Demand was particularly strong for televisions, refrigerators, air conditioners, laptops and other electronic devices.

Large-screen televisions attracted considerable attention, with 55-inch models representing a significant proportion of leading television products.

Fashion products accounted for an estimated 15–18% of total sales, contributing approximately ₹3,630–4,350 crore. The category recorded 22–25% year-on-year growth during the opening period.

The expansion of fashion sales reflects the availability of affordable clothing and festive products through digital marketplaces. Consumers in smaller towns increasingly have access to product selections that may not be available through local retail outlets.

The combination of smartphones, appliances and fashion demonstrates a broader pattern of online consumption, with consumers using e-commerce platforms for both major purchases and routine household requirements.

Smaller Cities and Rural India Drive Festive E-Commerce Growth

One of the most significant findings from Redseer’s assessment concerns the geographical distribution of online shoppers.

Approximately two-thirds of consumers participating in the first two days came from Tier-II cities and rural areas, indicating that festive e-commerce activity extends well beyond India’s largest metropolitan markets.

Growing smartphone availability, digital payment systems, regional-language interfaces and expanding logistics networks have helped make online shopping accessible to more households.

Affordable products also play an important role in attracting consumers from smaller towns, where purchasing decisions may place greater emphasis on price and value.

Redseer estimates that the number of first-time online shoppers doubled compared with the corresponding period in the previous year.

Younger consumers are also contributing to this expansion. Generation Z shoppers accounted for approximately one-third of customers on the opening day, reflecting the influence of digitally connected younger buyers.

These developments indicate that India’s online retail market is attracting consumers across different income groups, age categories and geographical regions.

Meesho Reports 75% Growth in First-Day Festive Orders

Meesho’s Mega Blockbuster Sale 2026 recorded a substantial increase in customer activity, reflecting the platform’s emphasis on affordable products and wider access to digital commerce.

According to the company’s official announcement, orders increased approximately 75% year-on-year on the first day, while the number of transacting customers grew around 60%.

Within the first 15 minutes of the sale, Meesho recorded a peak exceeding 75,000 orders per minute.

The company reported strong demand across fashion, home and kitchen products, beauty and personal care, children’s products and electronic accessories.

These figures indicate that increased order volumes were accompanied by wider customer participation. However, the reported order growth does not necessarily represent an equivalent increase in revenue or gross merchandise value.

Meesho’s performance provides an example of how value-focused marketplaces are attracting consumers seeking affordable products during major shopping events.

The company’s emphasis on smaller cities and regional sellers also connects its growth with the wider expansion of India’s digital retail ecosystem.

Meesho Mall Records More Than 200% Growth in Orders

Meesho reported particularly strong performance in its branded shopping segment, Meesho Mall.

Orders through Meesho Mall increased by more than 200% year-on-year during the opening day of the festive sale.

The company stated that the number of Meesho Mall customers from Tier-III and smaller markets nearly tripled compared with the previous year.

More than one-third of participating customers purchased a Meesho Mall product for the first time, indicating increasing interest in branded goods among value-conscious consumers.

Beauty and personal care products attracted substantial demand from first-time buyers, alongside health and wellness products and footwear.

The trend suggests that access to branded products is expanding beyond major urban markets as digital marketplaces introduce consumers to a wider range of goods.

For brands, such platforms offer opportunities to reach customers in locations where establishing physical retail outlets may require substantial investment.

Artificial Intelligence and Content Commerce Support Meesho’s Sales

Technology-driven product discovery contributed significantly to Meesho’s festive shopping activity.

According to the company’s disclosure, personalised recommendations powered approximately 85% of orders during the opening day.

These recommendations help customers discover products based on shopping behaviour, preferences and other relevant information.

Meesho also reported that orders generated through its content-commerce operations increased approximately 3.7 times year-on-year.

Content commerce connects product discovery with videos, creators and other digital content, allowing consumers to explore products through demonstrations and recommendations.

The company stated that approximately 90% of its active content-commerce creators were nano creators, while 81% came from non-metropolitan India.

This model creates opportunities for smaller digital creators to participate in e-commerce without operating conventional retail businesses.

It also allows sellers to reach customers through regional and community-based content, making product discovery more accessible to consumers outside major cities.

Small Businesses Benefit from India’s Festive Shopping Expansion

The growth of online shopping also creates opportunities for small manufacturers, independent brands and local sellers.

Meesho reported that the number of transacting sellers on its platform increased approximately 63% year-on-year during the opening day of its festive sale.

Participation by sellers from Tier-IV and smaller markets doubled, while the number of sellers receiving their first-ever Meesho order increased approximately 43%.

These figures indicate that the platform’s expansion is supporting participation by businesses located beyond established commercial centres.

Digital marketplaces can help small enterprises reach customers across the country without requiring their own extensive retail networks.

For manufacturers producing clothing, household products, accessories and other consumer goods, online platforms provide additional distribution opportunities.

However, sustained participation also depends on reliable logistics, manageable selling costs, product quality and efficient customer service.

The growing involvement of smaller sellers demonstrates how e-commerce can connect regional production with nationwide consumer demand.

Quick Commerce Adds Another Dimension to Festive Shopping

Rapid delivery services are becoming increasingly important within India’s digital retail industry.

Redseer reported that quick-commerce operations associated with major marketplaces generated gross merchandise value approximately four to five times their normal daily levels during the opening festive period.

Companies are increasingly using rapid delivery infrastructure to serve consumers purchasing household essentials, personal care products and other frequently required items.

Quick commerce differs from conventional e-commerce because it concentrates on shorter delivery times and the availability of products within defined service areas.

Its growth is creating additional demand for fulfilment centres, inventory management systems, logistics technology and local delivery networks.

However, the economics of rapid delivery depend on order density, operating costs and effective inventory management.

The expansion of quick commerce indicates that consumers are increasingly seeking both product variety and convenience through digital platforms.

Redseer Expects India’s Online Retail Market to Exceed $90 Billion in 2026

The strong festive opening follows a period of substantial growth in India’s online retail industry.

In its September 2026 research report, Redseer estimated that India’s online retail market expanded approximately 25% year-on-year during the first half of 2026.

The consultancy projected that the market could exceed $90 billion in gross merchandise value during calendar year 2026, representing annual growth of approximately 22–24%.

Redseer identified quick commerce, affordable online retail, younger consumers and increasing participation from smaller cities as important contributors to this expansion.

The firm also projected that India’s overall festive online shopping season could generate $15–16 billion in gross merchandise value.

These projections reflect industry expectations rather than completed annual sales.

Nevertheless, the opening performance indicates substantial consumer participation across multiple product categories.

India’s Digital Commerce Ecosystem Expands Beyond Metropolitan Markets

The combined findings from Redseer and Meesho demonstrate a significant shift in India’s online retail landscape.

Consumers from smaller towns are increasingly participating in major shopping events, while digital marketplaces are providing wider access to affordable products and branded merchandise.

At the same time, artificial intelligence, creator-led commerce and rapid delivery services are influencing how products are discovered, purchased and delivered.

The expansion is creating opportunities for manufacturers, regional sellers, logistics companies, digital creators and technology service providers.

Meesho’s reported growth in customer orders and seller participation illustrates how individual platforms are contributing to this broader development.

The industry’s estimated ₹24,000 crore in gross merchandise value during the first two days also demonstrates the scale of consumer activity generated by major online shopping events.

As India’s digital infrastructure and logistics capabilities continue to develop, online marketplaces are positioned to connect more consumers with businesses across the country.

The strong opening to the 2026 festive shopping season highlights the expanding reach of India’s digital economy. With smaller cities driving participation, affordable products attracting new buyers and technology improving shopping experiences, e-commerce is strengthening its role in connecting Indian consumers, manufacturers and small businesses through a nationwide digital marketplace.
