Kalyani-Paramount Unveil 10-Tonne Mbada 4×4 Light Armoured Vehicle at AAD 2026

India’s Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited and South Africa’s Paramount have unveiled the Mbada 4×4 Light Armoured Modular Vehicle at the Africa Aerospace and Defence exhibition, or AAD 2026, in South Africa, expanding a defence-industrial partnership that is increasingly targeting both Indian and international markets.

The vehicle was publicly unveiled on September 17, 2026 at Waterkloof Air Force Base near Pretoria. Paramount said the Mbada was developed jointly with Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited, or KSSL, the defence subsidiary of Bharat Forge, as a highly mobile and mission-configurable protected vehicle for operations across India, Africa, South Asia and other international markets.

Mbada Designed as a Lightweight Multi-Role Armoured Platform

The Mbada 4×4 is classified as a Light Armoured Modular Vehicle designed to combine protection with relatively low weight, high mobility and the ability to accept different mission systems.

At approximately 10 tonnes kerb weight, the vehicle is significantly lighter than many conventional mine-protected or infantry mobility platforms. This allows it to operate in situations where heavier vehicles may face limitations because of terrain, bridges, narrow roads or the need for rapid tactical movement.

The platform can be configured for reconnaissance, border protection, internal security, special-forces operations, troop transport, command and control, surveillance, logistics support, weapons carriage and force protection.

450-Horsepower Engine Gives Mbada High Mobility

Despite its relatively compact size, the Mbada is powered by a 450-horsepower six-cylinder turbo-diesel engine producing approximately 1,627 Nm of torque.

Power is transmitted through a six-speed automatic gearbox and a two-speed lockable transfer case. Independent suspension at the front and rear is intended to improve off-road mobility across difficult terrain.

The vehicle has a reported maximum road speed of around 110 km/h, placing a strong emphasis on mobility compared with heavier armoured platforms designed primarily around maximum blast protection.

STANAG-Level Ballistic and Mine Protection

The vehicle combines this mobility with modular ballistic and blast protection.

According to specifications released around AAD 2026, the Mbada can provide STANAG 4569 Level 1 and Level 2 ballistic protection, together with Level 2a and Level 2b mine-blast protection.

Its welded monocoque hull is designed to protect occupants against a blast equivalent to approximately 6 kg of TNT beneath the wheel or hull.

This allows the platform to retain a comparatively low weight while providing protection against small-arms fire, fragments and mine threats encountered during reconnaissance, patrol and border-security operations.

Modular Design Allows Different Mission Configurations

One of the defining features of the Kalyani-Paramount Mbada is its modular architecture.

The vehicle can be equipped with communications systems, battlefield networking equipment, ammunition racks, weapon mounts, antenna systems, central tyre inflation, run-flat tyres, infrared night-driving equipment, searchlights, winches and other mission-specific systems.

A roof-mounted turret ring also allows weapons or remote weapon stations to be integrated according to customer requirements.

The platform can therefore serve as the basis for several specialised variants rather than functioning as a single-purpose protected vehicle.

This approach can simplify logistics because different mission configurations can share a common underlying vehicle architecture, drivetrain and maintenance system.

Four-Person Crew and Flexible Layout

The Mbada is configured to carry four personnel, typically comprising a driver, commander and two additional crew members.

Four side doors provide direct access to the cabin, while the vehicle is available in both left-hand-drive and right-hand-drive configurations.

This flexibility is important for exports because prospective customers operate under different road and military requirements.

The platform has also been designed to function in demanding climatic environments, with published specifications indicating operation across temperatures ranging approximately from minus 20 degrees Celsius to 45 degrees Celsius without special preparation.

Mbada Is Closely Related to the Simha 4×4

The vehicle unveiled at AAD 2026 is not an entirely separate design from the Simha 4×4 unveiled earlier in the year.

Kalyani Strategic Systems and Paramount first presented the jointly developed platform as the Simha 4×4 at Eurosatory in Paris on June 16, 2026.

The companies described Simha as a next-generation light armoured multipurpose vehicle developed from inception for India, Africa, South Asia and other global markets.

At AAD 2026, the same core platform appeared under the Mbada name for the African market.

Paramount has stated that the concept first debuted as Simha, while Mbada represents the African-market identity of the same basic light armoured mobility platform.

The distinction is therefore primarily one of market positioning rather than the introduction of an entirely unrelated vehicle.

Simha Name Reflects Indian Market, Mbada African Identity

The naming also reflects the geographic markets targeted by the partnership.

“Simha” means lion in Sanskrit and several Indian languages and was selected for the configuration introduced at Eurosatory.

“Mbada” means leopard in Shona and reflects the African positioning of the vehicle, particularly its emphasis on agility, mobility and adaptability.

The use of separate names allows Kalyani and Paramount to tailor the vehicle’s identity to different markets while retaining the same underlying engineering architecture.

Kalyani and Paramount Build on Earlier Defence Partnership

The Mbada programme is part of a longer defence-industrial relationship between Kalyani Strategic Systems and Paramount Group.

The companies have previously cooperated on protected mobility vehicles, most notably the Kalyani M4, which is derived from Paramount’s armoured vehicle technology and manufactured in India.

The Kalyani M4 has already been inducted into Indian service and has also been deployed by Indian peacekeepers operating under United Nations missions.

Experience gained through such programmes has helped the partnership move from technology cooperation towards joint development of new platforms intended from the outset for multiple international customers.

From Licensed Manufacturing to Joint Development

The Mbada-Simha programme is particularly notable because the companies describe the platform as having been co-developed from inception.

This represents a different industrial model from conventional licensed production, where an existing foreign platform is manufactured locally.

Joint development gives Indian industry greater participation in engineering, systems integration, manufacturing and future modifications.

For Kalyani Strategic Systems, this approach supports its broader effort to move higher within the defence value chain and establish itself not simply as a supplier or manufacturer but as a developer of complete military platforms.

Targeting India, Africa and Global Export Markets

Kalyani and Paramount are positioning the vehicle for armed forces across India, Africa, South Asia and other international markets.

Light armoured vehicles are increasingly attractive to militaries that require protection but do not always need the weight and complexity associated with heavy mine-resistant vehicles.

Border security, reconnaissance, rapid-response operations, peacekeeping and special-forces missions often require a platform that can move quickly across difficult terrain while still protecting its crew.

The Mbada has been developed around precisely this requirement.

Its modular design also means customers can adapt the vehicle to different weapons, communications equipment and electronic systems without redesigning the entire platform.

AAD 2026 Gives Kalyani-Paramount Access to African Market

The unveiling at Africa Aerospace and Defence 2026 is strategically important because Africa remains a major market for protected mobility systems.

Many African armed forces operate across extremely diverse environments, ranging from deserts and savannahs to mountainous regions and urban areas.

These conditions often favour relatively lightweight and maintainable armoured vehicles rather than very heavy tracked or wheeled platforms.

Paramount already has considerable experience in African defence markets, while Kalyani brings Indian manufacturing scale and engineering capability.

The partnership therefore combines access to African customers with India’s increasingly competitive defence manufacturing base.

India’s Defence Industry Increasingly Developing Export-Oriented Platforms

The Mbada programme also illustrates a wider change taking place within the Indian defence industry.

Indian companies are increasingly designing products with international markets in mind rather than developing equipment exclusively against domestic procurement requirements.

This export-oriented approach can allow companies to spread development costs across larger production volumes while building manufacturing capabilities that are less dependent on individual Indian military contracts.

India has placed increasing emphasis on defence exports as domestic companies expand into missiles, artillery systems, armoured vehicles, naval equipment, electronics and aerospace components.

Joint programmes such as the Kalyani-Paramount vehicle family add another dimension by combining Indian manufacturing with international design, marketing and technology partnerships.

Mbada Shows Evolution of India-South Africa Defence Cooperation

The Mbada 4×4 light armoured vehicle therefore represents more than the introduction of another protected vehicle.

It demonstrates the evolution of India-South Africa industrial cooperation towards jointly engineered military platforms designed for multiple markets from their inception.

The approximately 10-tonne vehicle combines a 450-horsepower powertrain, high road speed, modular protection and configurable mission systems in a platform intended to sit between conventional unarmoured tactical vehicles and substantially heavier protected mobility systems.

Its unveiling at AAD 2026 also gives Kalyani Strategic Systems a visible presence in one of Africa’s most important defence exhibitions.

For India, the programme illustrates how domestic defence companies are increasingly seeking to compete internationally through joint development, modular engineering and export-oriented manufacturing rather than relying primarily on licensed production.

With the same underlying platform now appearing as the Simha 4×4 for India and global markets and the Mbada 4×4 for the African market, Kalyani and Paramount are attempting to build a common armoured vehicle family capable of addressing different operational and commercial requirements across several regions.
