Bharat Electronics Limited has secured additional orders worth ₹648 crore, adding another batch of defence electronics and technology contracts to the company’s growing order book. The latest orders cover a broad range of systems including laser-based infrared jammers, communication equipment, cybersecurity solutions, thermal imagers, transducers, artificial intelligence-based software solutions and transmit-receive modules.
The Navratna defence public sector undertaking disclosed that the ₹648 crore represents additional orders received since its previous order announcement on August 26, 2026. The latest package also includes upgrades, spares and services, reflecting BEL’s expanding role not only in supplying new defence equipment but also in supporting and modernising systems already in service.
The composition of the latest orders is particularly significant because it cuts across several areas that have become central to modern military operations. Electronic protection of aircraft, secure communications, electro-optical surveillance, radar electronics, cybersecurity and software-based processing are increasingly interconnected elements of contemporary combat systems.
Laser-Based Infrared Jammers Strengthen Aircraft Protection
Among the most notable technologies mentioned in the latest order announcement are laser-based infrared jammers. Such systems are designed to protect aircraft against infrared-guided missiles, particularly heat-seeking Man-Portable Air Defence Systems.
BEL already has a Directed Infrared Countermeasure system in its electronic-warfare portfolio. The company describes DIRCM as a laser-based aircraft protection system intended to defeat heat-seeking, shoulder-fired anti-aircraft missiles.
An infrared-guided missile normally detects heat emitted by an aircraft, particularly from its engines, and uses that infrared signature to guide itself towards the target. A DIRCM system attempts to disrupt this process after a missile threat has been detected.
BEL’s system directs a powerful laser beam towards the incoming missile’s infrared seeker. The laser interferes with the seeker and is intended to cause what BEL describes as an Optical Break Lock, preventing the missile from continuing to track the aircraft correctly.
The process is automated, allowing the countermeasure system to detect and respond to threats without requiring the flight crew to manually direct the jammer. BEL says its DIRCM architecture can also deal with multiple and simultaneous threats and employs a dual-band laser with independently programmable bands.
The inclusion of laser-based IR jammers in the latest order package therefore represents more than another conventional electronic-warfare procurement. It points towards continuing investment in active aircraft survivability systems intended to protect valuable airborne platforms against increasingly sophisticated infrared-guided weapons.
Cybersecurity Becomes Part of the Defence Electronics Order Book
Cybersecurity solutions constitute another component of the ₹648-crore order package.
Modern military platforms depend heavily on interconnected computers, communications networks, sensors and software. Radar information, electronic-warfare data, battlefield communications, command networks and surveillance feeds increasingly move through digital systems, making cybersecurity an integral part of military infrastructure rather than a separate information-technology requirement.
BEL has progressively expanded beyond its traditional hardware-intensive defence electronics business into networked command-and-control systems, secure communications and software-driven defence applications. The presence of cybersecurity solutions in the latest orders reflects this wider transformation.
For a company historically associated with radars, electronic warfare and military communications, cybersecurity provides a natural extension into protecting the networks connecting those systems.
AI-Based Software Enters the Latest Order Mix
The inclusion of artificial intelligence-based software solutions is equally noteworthy.
BEL has not disclosed the specific AI applications covered by the latest orders, and it would therefore be premature to associate them with a particular weapon or surveillance programme. Their inclusion nevertheless demonstrates that software and automated processing are becoming increasingly important components of BEL’s defence portfolio.
Military sensors can generate enormous quantities of information. Radars, electro-optical systems, electronic-support measures, communications networks and surveillance platforms all produce data that must be processed quickly enough to be operationally useful.
AI-assisted software can potentially support functions ranging from sensor-data processing and pattern recognition to decision-support and automated analysis. The precise capabilities involved in the latest BEL orders have not been publicly identified, but the procurement indicates that AI-based software is now forming part of the company’s contracted technology portfolio rather than remaining confined to research demonstrations.
Thermal Imaging Remains Critical for All-Weather Operations
Thermal imagers are another major component of the new orders.
Unlike conventional optical cameras that depend primarily on visible light, thermal imagers detect infrared radiation emitted by objects. They can therefore provide useful imagery in darkness and under environmental conditions where normal visual observation becomes difficult.
Military thermal imaging systems are used across a wide variety of platforms, including armoured vehicles, surveillance installations, weapon sights, reconnaissance equipment and border-monitoring systems.
BEL has longstanding experience in electro-optical equipment, and the latest order indicates continuing demand for indigenous thermal-imaging technology across India’s defence and security forces.
The significance of thermal imaging has increased further as military operations move towards continuous day-and-night surveillance. A platform that can operate effectively during daylight but loses situational awareness after darkness is at an obvious disadvantage. Thermal sensors consequently form an important part of modern observation, targeting and battlefield-surveillance systems.
TR Modules Point Towards Advanced Radar Electronics
The inclusion of transmit-receive modules, commonly known as TR modules, is another technologically important element of the order package.
TR modules are fundamental components of modern active electronically scanned array radars. Instead of relying on a single transmitter feeding a mechanically directed antenna, an AESA radar contains numerous independently controlled transmit-receive elements.
These modules allow the radar beam to be steered electronically, enabling rapid changes in direction without physically rotating the antenna for every scan. AESA technology can provide faster scanning, improved reliability, greater flexibility and the ability to perform several radar functions within extremely short periods.
TR modules are therefore important building blocks for advanced surveillance, fire-control and multifunction radar systems.
BEL has extensive involvement in India’s indigenous radar ecosystem, making domestic capability in these components important for reducing dependence on imported radar electronics and supporting future radar production at scale.
Communications and Transducers Add to the Order Package
Communication equipment forms another substantial area of BEL’s traditional defence business and appears again in the latest contracts.
Secure military communications are essential for connecting individual soldiers, vehicles, aircraft, ships, headquarters and command networks. Modern warfare increasingly depends on the ability to move targeting and situational-awareness information rapidly between platforms, making resilient communications infrastructure as important as many individual weapon systems.
The latest package also includes transducers. These devices convert one form of energy or physical signal into another and are used across numerous electronic and sensing applications. BEL has not disclosed the particular systems associated with the transducer orders, so their precise defence application cannot be established from the announcement alone.
BEL Has Been Receiving Orders Across Multiple Technology Areas
The ₹648-crore announcement continues a series of additional orders secured by BEL during 2026.
On August 26, the company announced another ₹730 crore in orders. Earlier batches during the year included communication equipment, electro-optics, ammunition fuzes, Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear systems, seekers, security systems, avionics, encryptors, tank subsystems, radars, jammers and other equipment.
The pattern illustrates the unusually broad technological footprint BEL has developed within India’s defence-industrial system.
The company is no longer associated principally with one category such as radar or communications. Its portfolio now extends across radar systems, electronic warfare, military communications, electro-optics, avionics, naval electronics, missile electronics, cybersecurity, command-and-control systems, seekers, software and several non-defence technology areas.
This breadth also means that successive BEL order announcements often represent collections of contracts from different customers and programmes rather than a single large procurement.
Order Book Stood Above ₹72,000 Crore
BEL entered the current financial year with a substantial backlog of contracted work.
According to the company’s results for the first quarter of FY2026-27, its order book stood at ₹72,258 crore as of July 1, 2026.
During the same quarter, BEL recorded revenue from operations of ₹5,533.06 crore, representing year-on-year growth of 25.27 percent compared with ₹4,416.83 crore during the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Profit before tax reached ₹1,402.83 crore during the quarter, while profit after tax stood at ₹1,048.33 crore.
The size of the order book gives BEL considerable production visibility, but its composition is equally important. India’s defence-electronics requirements are increasingly moving towards technologies that require extensive domestic capability in sensors, processors, electronic warfare, software, secure networking and radar electronics.
From Defence Electronics Manufacturer to Systems Company
BEL’s latest orders illustrate a wider change taking place within India’s defence manufacturing sector.
Earlier phases of defence indigenisation often concentrated on replacing individual imported components or producing foreign-designed equipment under licence. The current requirement is increasingly centred on developing complete domestic technology chains extending from sensors and electronics to software, communications and system integration.
The ₹648-crore package reflects that transition unusually well. Laser-based infrared jammers address aircraft survivability. Thermal imagers provide electro-optical surveillance. TR modules form critical elements of advanced radar systems. Communications equipment connects platforms and formations. Cybersecurity protects the networks carrying operational information, while AI-based software adds another layer of automated processing.
They are different technologies, but they increasingly operate as parts of the same digitally connected battlespace.
For BEL, the latest order announcement therefore represents more than another addition to its financial backlog. It demonstrates how India’s largest defence-electronics public sector company is being drawn deeper into technologies that determine how military platforms detect threats, communicate information, protect themselves electronically and process increasingly large volumes of battlefield data.
