The Unique Identification Authority of India has introduced a new technology that could make Aadhaar-based digital onboarding considerably simpler, allowing banks, fintech companies and other organisations to integrate face authentication directly within their own mobile applications.
UIDAI launched the Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) and a new Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox at the Global Fintech Fest 2026 in Mumbai on September 9.
The initiative is designed to make Aadhaar authentication easier to integrate, test and deploy while reducing the need for users to move between different applications during identity verification.
Aadhaar Face Authentication Moves Inside Banking Apps
The biggest change introduced by the new SDK is that UIDAI’s face authentication capability can now be incorporated directly into native Android and iOS applications.
For example, a customer opening an account or completing an identity-verification process through a banking, insurance or broking application could carry out Aadhaar Face Authentication without leaving that application.
Earlier, a similar authentication process depended on a separate background application known as FaceRD. This added another component to the customer journey and meant that Aadhaar Face Authentication depended on the required application being available on the user’s device.
The new SDK reduces this dependence and enables a more integrated single-app experience.
AI Helps Detect Spoofing Attempts
UIDAI has also incorporated security capabilities into the new SDK.
The software includes artificial intelligence and machine-learning-based liveness and anti-spoofing mechanisms, helping determine whether the person appearing before the smartphone camera is genuinely present rather than an image or other attempted imitation.
The SDK also supports encryption and secure handling of authentication information and has been designed to operate across consumer smartphones.
UIDAI expects this approach to make it easier for government departments, banks, fintech platforms and other organisations to introduce face-authentication-based services.
New Sandbox Allows Testing Before Launch
Alongside the SDK, UIDAI has introduced a dedicated Face Authentication Sandbox.
The Sandbox provides organisations with a controlled environment in which they can integrate and test their Aadhaar authentication workflow before moving it into production.
Developers and quality-assurance teams can test different stages of the process, including user provisioning and consent, face capture, liveness verification, authentication, response validation and error handling.
Importantly, this testing can be conducted without requiring separate external biometric hardware.
The system can also be used to test failure situations, including network interruptions, timeouts, invalid digital signatures and attempted spoofing. This allows organisations to identify problems before offering an Aadhaar Face Authentication service to customers.
More Than 500 Crore Face Authentication Transactions
Face Authentication itself is not a new Aadhaar capability.
UIDAI’s indigenously developed AI and machine-learning-based Face Authentication system was launched in 2021 and has since grown into a large-scale component of India’s digital identity infrastructure.
According to UIDAI, the platform has now processed more than 500 crore Face Authentication transactions and has been adopted by nearly 200 entities.
Users include Union government ministries and departments, state governments, banks, non-banking financial companies, telecom companies, brokerage firms and certifying authorities.
Face Authentication is already used across services including Digital Life Certificates for pensioners, Ayushman Bharat beneficiary onboarding, Direct Benefit Transfer schemes, Aadhaar-enabled payments, SIM activation through e-KYC, PM E-Drive, PM Awas Yojana and PM-Kisan.
UIDAI Introduces Onboarding Playbook
UIDAI has also released a “Playbook on Ease of Onboarding” alongside the new technology.
The document is intended to guide organisations in the banking, financial services and insurance sector through the process of joining UIDAI’s authentication ecosystem.
It can assist institutions seeking to use Aadhaar authentication for verifying customers, employees and other business participants.
Making Aadhaar Authentication More Seamless
The new SDK represents an important change in how Aadhaar Face Authentication can be delivered to users.
Instead of requiring customers to navigate a separate authentication application, banks, insurers, fintech companies and other eligible organisations can increasingly build the authentication step into their existing digital services.
Combined with the Sandbox for pre-deployment testing and AI-driven anti-spoofing capabilities, the initiative could reduce friction during digital onboarding while maintaining the security requirements of India’s Aadhaar authentication infrastructure.
With Aadhaar Face Authentication already processing billions of transactions, UIDAI’s latest move is aimed at making the technology easier for institutions to integrate and simpler for citizens to use.
