Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 4, 2026 congratulated Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on becoming the longest continuously serving prime minister in Italy’s postwar history, while highlighting the growing strength of ties between India and Italy.
In a message shared on X, Modi said the milestone reflected the trust and confidence placed in Meloni’s leadership by the Italian people. He also underlined the importance of her personal engagement in strengthening the India–Italy Special Strategic Partnership.
The Prime Minister said Meloni’s friendship had played an important role in deepening bilateral relations and expressed confidence that the two countries would continue working closely to build a more prosperous future for their people.
India and Italy elevated their relationship to a Strategic Partnership in 2023, and cooperation has since expanded across defence, trade, investment, clean energy, technology, connectivity, migration and mobility, as well as cooperation in the Indo-Pacific.
The two governments have also increasingly focused on defence-industrial collaboration, resilient supply chains, critical technologies and economic partnerships, giving the relationship a broader strategic dimension beyond traditional diplomatic engagement.
Meloni became Prime Minister of Italy in October 2022. Her tenure has now surpassed those of other continuously serving Italian prime ministers in the postwar era, marking a notable political milestone in a country historically known for frequent changes of government.
Modi said he looked forward to continuing the close cooperation between New Delhi and Rome and extended his best wishes to Meloni for continued success in the years ahead.
The congratulatory message also reflects the strong personal rapport that has developed between the two leaders, alongside the broader institutional strengthening of India–Italy relations.
