BEML Adds ₹180.6-Crore Vande Bharat Sleeper Order to Growing Manufacturing Book

Defence public sector undertaking BEML Limited has secured an additional order worth approximately ₹180.60 crore from Integral Coach Factory for the manufacture and supply of Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets, strengthening the company’s growing role in India’s next-generation passenger railway programme.

BEML disclosed the fresh contract to the stock exchanges on September 2, 2026, stating that the order had been received in the normal course of business. The company has not disclosed the number of trainsets covered by the additional order or their delivery schedule.

The latest order further expands BEML’s involvement in the Vande Bharat Sleeper programme, which is intended to extend India’s indigenous semi-high-speed train platform from primarily daytime chair-car operations into longer-distance and overnight passenger services. The sleeper configuration is being developed to combine higher-speed intercity operations with modern sleeping accommodation and passenger amenities.

BEML has emerged as an important manufacturing participant in this programme, adding premium passenger trainsets to a railway portfolio that already includes metro coaches and other rolling stock. The latest ₹180.60-crore contract therefore provides additional work for the company’s rail manufacturing operations as Indian Railways prepares to expand deployment of the sleeper version of Vande Bharat.

The order also comes during a period of strong order activity for BEML across its different businesses. In August, the company secured a ₹184.25-crore order from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for Light Combat Helicopter fuselage aerostructures, alongside an international order for hydraulic excavators destined for African markets. The new Vande Bharat contract further demonstrates how BEML is using its engineering and manufacturing capabilities across defence, aerospace, rail transportation and heavy equipment.

For BEML, the significance of the latest contract extends beyond its immediate ₹180.60-crore value. Participation in the Vande Bharat Sleeper programme positions the company within one of India’s most prominent indigenous rolling-stock initiatives as the country seeks to modernise long-distance passenger transport while expanding domestic manufacturing capability.

The September 2 order consequently adds another manufacturing programme to BEML’s growing book while reinforcing the unusual breadth of a Ministry of Defence PSU that today operates not only as an important supplier of military equipment but also as a major participant in India’s rail, metro and heavy-engineering sectors.
