India Post has accelerated its digital and infrastructure modernisation programme with the launch of upgraded Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa applications alongside the inauguration of 14 renovated Post Office buildings across the country. The initiatives are aimed at improving last-mile delivery, expanding digital access to postal services and creating a more citizen-friendly service network.
Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya M. Scindia and Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani launched the upgraded applications on August 24, 2026. The new platforms form part of the Department of Posts’ broader effort to combine its extensive physical network with technology-enabled services under the DoP IT 2.0 modernisation programme.
The upgraded Dak MITRA, or Mobile Interface for Transactions & Rural Assistance, has been developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology under the Advanced Postal Technology platform. It will serve as a unified digital operating system for more than 1.4 lakh Branch Post Offices across India.
Running on Android-based handheld devices, Dak MITRA allows Branch Postmasters to carry out a range of paperless and real-time transactions. These include mail booking, OTP-enabled doorstep delivery, banking services, insurance transactions, Aadhaar-based biometric e-KYC, cash deposits and withdrawals, and collection of Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance premiums.
For customers, the Dak Sewa App brings several postal services onto a single digital platform available around the clock. Users can track consignments, book services, lodge complaints, locate Post Offices and PIN codes, and access financial calculators. The platform supports 23 Indian languages through BHASHINI, extending digital accessibility to a wider section of the population.
India Post is also redesigning its physical network in collaboration with the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. A new design framework has been created to improve accessibility, functionality, operational efficiency and customer experience while retaining flexibility for local requirements.
As part of the initial proof-of-concept programme, 40 Post Offices across 17 states were selected for modernisation. Twenty-seven have already been completed, while 14 newly renovated facilities were inaugurated on August 24. The remaining offices in the first phase are targeted for completion by August 31, 2026.
The newly inaugurated Post Offices include facilities at Patliputra in Bihar, Vasant Kunj in Delhi, Sector-56 Gurugram, Kakurgachi in Kolkata, Vidisha and Sanchi in Madhya Pradesh, Shillong, Kandivali West in Mumbai, Shankar Nagar and Ayodhya Nagar in Nagpur, Nirala Nagar, Gomti Nagar and Indira Nagar in Lucknow, and Prayagraj.
Following the initial rollout, the Department of Posts plans to extend the modernisation programme to another 60 Post Offices during the current financial year.
The upgraded facilities feature improved signage, redesigned customer-service areas, better seating, dedicated service zones and technology-enabled infrastructure. Depending on location and feasibility, some offices will also offer facilities such as 24×7 services, ATMs, after-hours booking and smart parcel services.
Together, the Dak MITRA and Dak Sewa platforms and the physical redesign of Post Offices mark a significant shift in India Post’s transformation strategy. The Department is increasingly moving toward a hybrid model in which its nationwide physical presence is supported by digital tools, doorstep transactions and multilingual online services, while retaining its traditional role as one of the country’s most extensive public-service networks.
