INDIAN AIR FORCE CONCLUDES HIGH-TEMPO MULTINATIONAL EXERCISES

Indian Air Force Concludes High-Tempo Multinational Exercises Pitch Black and Udara Shakti 2026

The exercise involved complex Large Force Employment missions conducted in a demanding, high-threat and multi-domain operational environment. Such missions are designed to test the ability of participating forces to coordinate large formations of aircraft, integrate different platforms and execute complex combat scenarios involving multiple allied air forces.

The Indian Air Force has successfully concluded its participation in two major international air exercises, Exercise Pitch Black 2026 in Australia and Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 in Malaysia, demonstrating the service’s ability to undertake sustained overseas deployments and operate alongside multiple international air forces across the Indo-Pacific.

The dual deployment highlighted the Indian Air Force’s growing operational reach, advanced tactical capabilities and emphasis on strengthening interoperability with strategic partners in the region.

Rafales Participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026

The first phase of the deployment saw the Indian Air Force participate in Exercise Pitch Black 2026, hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force. The IAF deployed its frontline Rafale fighter aircraft, which operated alongside air forces from more than 20 participating nations.

For the Indian Air Force, the exercise provided an opportunity for tactical integration, professional exchange and interoperability with a diverse range of international partners. The operations also enabled participating air forces to study different approaches to mission planning, force employment and combat coordination.

Direct Deployment to Malaysia for Exercise Udara Shakti

Following the conclusion of operations in Australia, the Indian Air Force contingent deployed directly to Subang, Malaysia, to participate in Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 with the Royal Malaysian Air Force.

The bilateral exercise involved high-intensity combat sorties and joint tactical manoeuvres. Indian Air Force aircrew operated alongside and against Royal Malaysian Air Force aircraft, including the Su-30MKM and F/A-18 Hornet.

The exercise focused on refining air combat tactics, improving combined operational flexibility and conducting Subject Matter Expert Exchanges between the two air forces. These interactions allowed personnel to exchange professional knowledge and operational experience across different areas of military aviation.

Cooperation Beyond Flying Operations

The engagement between the participating air forces extended beyond aerial missions. Personnel also exchanged experiences related to aircraft maintenance, mission planning and other operational practices.

The exercises additionally created opportunities for interaction among personnel at different levels, strengthening professional relationships and improving familiarity between the participating forces.

The ability to deploy directly from Australia to Malaysia also demonstrated the Indian Air Force’s capacity to sustain operations across multiple international locations during a single overseas deployment.

Strengthening India’s Indo-Pacific Defence Partnerships

The conclusion of Exercises Pitch Black and Udara Shakti marks another significant phase in the Indian Air Force’s expanding programme of international military engagements.

Participation in large multinational exercises allows the IAF to train in complex operational environments that involve numerous aircraft types, different command structures and coalition-style missions. Bilateral exercises such as Udara Shakti, meanwhile, help strengthen direct military-to-military cooperation with regional partners.

Through continued participation in such exercises, the Indian Air Force aims to enhance interoperability, develop professional partnerships and contribute to regional security and stability across the Indo-Pacific.

The successful completion of both Exercise Pitch Black 2026 and Exercise Udara Shakti 2026 reflects the increasing scale and operational reach of India’s air power and its growing role in collaborative security engagements with friendly nations.
