Nabhastra Technologies has reportedly emerged as the L1 bidder in a Government e-Marketplace (GeM) procurement for 30 long-range VTOL kamikaze drones, marking another development in India’s growing indigenous loitering-munition and unmanned aerial systems ecosystem.
The procurement is significant as the Indian armed forces continue to expand their use of unmanned systems capable of providing persistent surveillance, precision engagement and rapid response against battlefield targets. Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) capability is particularly valuable because it allows such systems to operate without conventional runways or prepared launch infrastructure.
Nabhastra Emerges as L1 Bidder
Nabhastra’s emergence as the lowest bidder (L1) places the Indian defence technology company in a strong position in the procurement process. The reported GeM procurement concerns a quantity of 30 long-range VTOL kamikaze drones, intended to provide an indigenous precision-strike capability.
An L1 designation means that the bidder has submitted the lowest technically compliant commercial offer in the procurement process. It does not, by itself, constitute final delivery or induction; the procurement must proceed through the applicable contractual and administrative stages before the systems are formally supplied.
VTOL Capability for Flexible Battlefield Operations
VTOL loitering munitions combine the advantages of unmanned aerial vehicles with those of precision-guided strike systems. Unlike conventional fixed-wing drones that generally require a runway, catapult or other launch arrangement, VTOL platforms can take off and land vertically from relatively confined locations.
For military users, this can provide greater flexibility during dispersed operations. A VTOL loitering munition can be deployed close to the operational area, launched rapidly and directed towards a designated target after spending time searching or loitering over the battlefield.
The combination of long-range operation, vertical take-off capability and precision strike can make such systems useful against a range of battlefield targets, particularly where conventional air support may be unavailable or too costly to employ.
India’s Expanding Loitering-Munition Ecosystem
The reported procurement comes amid a broader expansion of India’s domestic unmanned warfare industry. Indian defence companies and startups are increasingly developing loitering munitions, combat drones and autonomous systems for surveillance and precision engagement.
The growing demand for such platforms has also been accelerated by lessons from recent conflicts, where relatively inexpensive unmanned systems have demonstrated their ability to influence battlefield operations. Armed forces worldwide are consequently investing in systems that can provide persistent aerial surveillance and precision effects while reducing the risks to manned platforms.
For India, the increasing participation of domestic companies in this sector supports the broader Aatmanirbhar Bharat objective of reducing dependence on imported unmanned and precision-strike technologies.
A Step Forward for Indigenous Unmanned Warfare
If the procurement proceeds to contract and delivery, the reported L1 position would represent an important opportunity for Nabhastra to expand its presence in India’s rapidly developing unmanned defence sector.
The acquisition of long-range VTOL loitering munitions would also give Indian military units access to an additional class of flexible unmanned strike capability, complementing conventional artillery, missiles, combat aircraft and other battlefield systems.
The development reflects a broader shift in modern warfare towards networked, autonomous and expendable unmanned platforms. As India’s defence ecosystem continues to develop indigenous solutions in this field, systems such as VTOL loitering munitions are likely to become an increasingly important component of the country’s future battlefield architecture.
