Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s long public journey has reached another major political milestone, with world leaders extending congratulations as he becomes India’s longest-serving elected Prime Minister. The moment carries significance beyond domestic politics because it reflects the continuity of leadership in the world’s largest democracy, the sustained mandate of Indian voters across three general elections, and India’s growing diplomatic weight across the Global South.
According to the Press Information Bureau release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office on 9 June 2026, leaders from different parts of the world praised Prime Minister Modi’s governance, his advocacy for developing nations, and his vision of an inclusive and economically dynamic India. The greetings came at a time when India’s global presence has expanded through infrastructure diplomacy, development partnerships, digital public goods, diaspora outreach, and stronger engagement with countries across Asia, the Pacific, Africa, the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean region.
Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Disanayaka conveyed warm congratulations on behalf of the government and people of Sri Lanka. His message highlighted the trust repeatedly placed in Prime Minister Modi by the people of India and pointed to India’s economic and social transformation under his leadership. The Sri Lankan message also carries a wider diplomatic meaning. India and Sri Lanka have seen a deepening of ties through the Neighbourhood First policy, development support, connectivity projects, and India’s decisive assistance during Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 2022. PIB also recalled Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Sri Lanka from 4 to 6 April 2025, during which he received the Mitra Vibhushana, Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honour for a foreign dignitary.
Papua New Guinea Prime Minister James Marape also congratulated Prime Minister Modi through a personal video message. His remarks focused on Modi’s leadership example and India’s achievement in lifting large numbers of people out of poverty. The message from Papua New Guinea is especially important in the context of India’s outreach to Pacific Island nations. Prime Minister Modi’s May 2023 visit to Papua New Guinea for the third Forum for India–Pacific Islands Cooperation was the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to that country. It marked a major step in India’s engagement with the Pacific and strengthened India’s image as a development partner of smaller island nations.
Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar also extended congratulations, noting India’s stronger role in global affairs under Modi’s leadership. Her message referred to India’s achievements in foreign policy, economic growth, infrastructure development and socio-economic progress. This greeting also reflects the emotional and civilisational link between India and the Caribbean. Prime Minister Modi visited Trinidad and Tobago from 3 to 4 July 2025, the first bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister in 26 years, coinciding with the 180th anniversary of the arrival of Indian immigrants in the country.
The milestone is being discussed in relation to India’s post-election prime ministerial record. Reports note that on 10 June 2026, Prime Minister Modi completes 4,399 consecutive days in office as Prime Minister, moving past Jawaharlal Nehru’s elected-era uninterrupted record of 4,398 days after India’s first general elections.
This moment also shows how India’s domestic political continuity has become a factor in its external relations. Countries across the Global South now see India as a stable partner that combines democratic legitimacy with long-term policy direction. Whether in neighbourhood support, Pacific outreach, diaspora diplomacy or development cooperation, the congratulations from Sri Lanka, Papua New Guinea and Trinidad and Tobago underline the same message: India’s leadership is being watched closely, and its internal democratic mandate is shaping its external influence.
