The Indian Navy’s sail training vessel INS Sudarshini arrived at the historic Mediterranean port city of Alexandria on 1 March 2026, marking a key milestone in her ongoing transoceanic expedition, Lokayan-26.
The arrival follows the ship’s northbound transit through the iconic Suez Canal, after departing Safaga last week. Stretching approximately 193 kilometres, the canal remains one of the world’s most significant maritime corridors, linking the East and the West. For the trainees onboard the three-masted barque, navigating this historic waterway proved to be one of the most valuable seamanship experiences of the voyage so far.
Strengthening Maritime Bridges
The port call in Alexandria forms part of the “Bridges of Friendship” initiative, underscoring the longstanding maritime partnership between India and Egypt. The two nations share centuries-old cultural and commercial linkages, and in recent years, bilateral engagement has expanded steadily across defence, security, and maritime cooperation.
By docking in Alexandria — a city synonymous with ancient trade routes and naval heritage — INS Sudarshini’s visit symbolises India’s continued commitment to strengthening naval diplomacy and deepening strategic ties in the region.
Naval Engagement and Professional Exchange
Upon arrival, the ship was formally received by officials of the Egyptian Navy and representatives from the Indian Embassy. The Commanding Officer paid a courtesy call on Rear Admiral Mahmoud Abdelsattar, Commander of Alexandria Naval Base.
During the port call, crew members are scheduled to participate in professional interactions, cross-cultural engagements, and community outreach programmes. These activities are designed to foster goodwill, enhance operational understanding, and promote interoperability between the Indian and Egyptian navies.
A Voyage Beyond Training
Lokayan-26 is more than a training expedition; it is a floating symbol of India’s maritime heritage and diplomatic outreach. As INS Sudarshini sails across global waters, each port of call reinforces India’s vision of cooperative maritime engagement and mutual respect among nations.
Her successful passage through the Suez Canal and arrival at Alexandria stand as both a seamanship achievement and a testament to the enduring Indo-Egyptian maritime partnership.
