PM Narendra Modi is the first foreign head of government to receive Bhutan’s highest civilian award, the Ngadag Pel gi Khorlo, which is considered the pinnacle of the country’s honor system because it supersedes all other orders, decorations, and medals.

The award was given by Bhutan’s King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, in honor of Modi’s contribution to India-Bhutan relations and his contributions to the Bhutanese people.

On his social media account, Bhutan Prime Minister Lotay Tshering said that he was, “overjoyed to hear His Majesty pronounce Your Excellency Modiji’s name for the highest civilian decoration.”

He also added, “highlighted all the unconditional friendship and support Modiji extended over the years and particularly during the pandemic.”

“Much deserving! Congratulations from the people of Bhutan. In all interactions, seen Your Excellency as a great, spiritual human being. Looking forward to celebrating the honor in person,” Tshering said.

In recent years, Modi has received several international honors. In honor of his leadership and vision for India’s growth as a global power, and his contributions to advance the India-US strategic alliance, he was given the Legion of Merit in the highest degree of the chief commander by the US president last year.

Russia’s highest civilian honor, the Order of St Andrew the Apostle, was presented to him in 2019 for encouraging partnership and good relations between the two countries.

In the same year, the UAE bestowed the Zayed Medal on him, while the Maldives bestowed the Order of the Distinguished Rule of Nishan Izzuddin.
