The Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises will inaugurate a new ₹156-crore Technology Centre at Devanahalli in Bengaluru on September 10, adding advanced electronics manufacturing, prototyping and technical-training infrastructure to one of India’s largest aerospace and electronics clusters.
The centre has been developed by the Ministry of MSME on 10 acres of land provided by the Karnataka government. It includes dedicated training, production and administrative blocks, along with hostels and staff accommodation.
Its principal focus will be Electronics System Design and Manufacturing, or ESDM.
The facility will give MSMEs access to equipment that many smaller companies would find difficult to acquire independently. The installed capabilities include a Surface-Mount Technology line, additive-manufacturing systems, CNC five-axis and three-axis machines, Electric Discharge Machines and supporting testing laboratories.
This makes the centre relevant not only to conventional electronics manufacturing but also to companies supplying aerospace, defence, industrial automation and semiconductor-related industries.
Access to Manufacturing Infrastructure
A recurring problem for smaller engineering companies is the cost of moving from design to a production-ready product.
A company developing an electronic assembly may have the engineering capability to design a printed circuit board but lack an SMT production line for prototype and pilot manufacturing. Similarly, an aerospace supplier may need occasional access to five-axis machining or specialised inspection equipment without being able to justify the capital cost of installing an entire production cell.
The Devanahalli centre is designed to provide such facilities as shared infrastructure.
MSMEs will be able to use the centre for design assistance, prototyping, testing and limited production work, while technical and business advisory services will also be available.
The practical advantage is that companies can develop and validate products before making larger investments in their own factories.
That is particularly useful in aerospace and defence manufacturing, where customers generally require extensive qualification before approving a new supplier or component for serial production.
Located Close to a Major Aerospace and Electronics Cluster
The location at Devanahalli places the centre close to a dense concentration of aerospace, electronics and engineering companies.
The MSME Ministry specifically identified HAL, ISRO, National Aerospace Laboratories, Airbus, Boeing, Texas Instruments, Mitsubishi Electric India, Centum Electronics, GE, Philips and Wipro among the major organisations operating within the wider catchment area. Numerous smaller companies working in defence, aerospace, semiconductor design, industrial automation and advanced electronics are also located around Bengaluru.
That proximity matters because technology centres are most useful when their equipment and training programmes correspond closely with the requirements of nearby industry.
A supplier working for an aerospace company, for example, may require precision-machining capability as well as knowledge of electronics assembly and testing. An industrial-electronics company may need PCB prototyping, embedded-system development and automation support.
The new centre has been configured around precisely those requirements rather than serving as a general-purpose training institution.
Capacity to Train 10,000 People a Year
The other major role of the Devanahalli facility will be technical training.
The centre has been equipped to train up to 10,000 people annually, with courses planned in embedded-system design, PCB design and assembly, automation, robotics, equipment maintenance and repair.
This is important for Bengaluru’s manufacturing sector because electronics production requires skills quite different from conventional mechanical assembly.
An SMT production line, for example, needs technicians familiar with component placement, soldering processes, inspection and troubleshooting. Embedded-system work requires knowledge of electronics as well as software, while automated factories increasingly require technicians who can work with sensors, control systems and robotics.
The centre is intended to provide training linked directly to these industrial requirements.
Beyond Training
The Ministry’s Technology Centre network was created not simply as a vocational-training system but as a manufacturing-support platform for smaller companies.
Its centres provide services including product design, prototyping, toolmaking, testing and production assistance. The Devanahalli facility extends that model into electronics-intensive manufacturing.
The inclusion of five-axis machining and additive manufacturing alongside an SMT line is particularly notable because modern aerospace and electronics products increasingly combine mechanical and electronic systems.
A UAV manufacturer, for example, may require machined structural components, embedded electronics and PCB assemblies within the same product-development cycle. A common facility capable of supporting several stages of that process can reduce dependence on multiple external vendors during early development.
Relevant to Aerospace and Defence Suppliers
Although the centre is not a defence facility, its location and equipment make it directly relevant to the defence and aerospace supply chain.
Bengaluru hosts HAL, DRDO laboratories, ISRO centres, NAL and a large network of Tier-1 and Tier-2 aerospace suppliers. Private defence and space startups have also expanded rapidly across the region.
Many of these larger organisations rely on smaller suppliers for machined parts, electronics assemblies, test equipment and specialised subsystems.
Giving MSMEs access to modern production equipment can make it easier for them to meet the technical requirements needed to enter those supply chains.
The inauguration ceremony itself will include an exhibition showcasing Indian MSME contributions to the aerospace and ESDM sectors, underlining the intended link between the new centre and the surrounding industrial base.
Union Minister of State for MSME Shobha Karandlaje is scheduled to inaugurate the facility on September 10. Karnataka ministers Krishna Byre Gowda and Vijayanand Kashappanavar are also expected to attend.
The ₹156-crore investment gives Bengaluru’s smaller manufacturers access to equipment and technical infrastructure that would otherwise require substantial individual investment. Its value will depend on how extensively local companies use the centre for actual product development, qualification and production support rather than treating it primarily as a training campus.
