A Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (Calidris acuminata), one of the rarest migratory waders to appear in India, has been documented at the Najafgarh wetland near Mankrola village on the Gurugram side of the marsh, adding another remarkable bird record to the biodiversity-rich wetland landscape of the National Capital Region.
The bird was photographed on August 30, 2026, by NCR-based conservationist and birder Akshit Dua, who observed it actively feeding in shallow wetland habitat alongside Common Sandpipers and Wood Sandpipers. The identification was based on a combination of features including its prominent pale supercilium, rufous-streaked crown, eye-ring, rusty-brown scalloped upperparts and diffuse breast markings.
An Exceptionally Rare Visitor to India
The significance of the sighting lies in how far India sits outside the species’ normal migration route. Sharp-tailed Sandpipers breed across northern Siberia and the Russian Far East before migrating south through eastern Asia towards their principal non-breeding grounds in Australia and New Zealand. Smaller numbers also winter elsewhere in the southwestern Pacific.
India therefore lies well to the west of the species’ usual migration corridor. Most Sharp-tailed Sandpipers follow the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, a vast migratory system extending from Arctic breeding grounds through East and Southeast Asia to Australasia. For an individual to appear around Delhi-NCR represents a substantial deviation from the species’ normal route.
The species is capable of extraordinary long-distance movement. Adult birds migrate more than 10,000 kilometres between their Russian breeding areas and Australasia, while juveniles can travel eastwards to Alaska before undertaking a remarkable trans-Pacific flight of nearly 10,000 kilometres towards their southern non-breeding grounds.
Only a Handful of Historical Records
Published ornithological literature contains only a very small number of historical records associated with India. The sequence cited for the species includes a bird recorded at Gilgit in 1880, another at Vandalur in Tamil Nadu in 1915, an unconfirmed report from Kurud Tank in Chhattisgarh in 2004, and a photographed Sharp-tailed Sandpiper at Najafgarh on September 24, 2019. The latest 2026 observation has consequently been described as the fifth record in this historical sequence.
There is, however, an important geographical qualification. Gilgit is today outside the political boundaries of the Republic of India, while the 2004 Chhattisgarh observation was not confirmed. The new Najafgarh bird is nevertheless among an exceptionally small number of documented appearances of the species in India and remains one of the most unusual migratory-wader sightings reported from the country in recent years.
The fact that Najafgarh has now produced photographed records in both 2019 and 2026 also raises interesting questions about how rare vagrant shorebirds use the wetland during migration. It does not necessarily indicate a regular migration route, but it reinforces the value of sustained monitoring at major urban wetlands.
A Difficult Wader to Identify
Sharp-tailed Sandpipers can be difficult to recognise in the field because several migratory waders share similar body proportions, plumage and feeding behaviour. The species can particularly resemble the Pectoral Sandpiper (Calidris melanotos), another long-distance migrant that is itself scarce in India.
Close examination of plumage is therefore important. Sharp-tailed Sandpipers typically show a strongly patterned crown with warm rufous tones, a prominent pale eyebrow and finely patterned upperparts. Juvenile birds can display especially rich chestnut and buff coloration.
Accurate identification becomes even more challenging when several species forage together at a wetland, as happened at Najafgarh. Photographs allow observers to examine plumage details that may be difficult to assess during a brief field observation and are particularly valuable when documenting rare or potentially first records.
Najafgarh Provides Valuable Habitat for Migratory Birds
The sighting once again highlights the ecological importance of the Najafgarh wetland and surrounding seasonally flooded landscape, which supports a remarkable diversity of resident and migratory birds despite lying within one of India’s most heavily urbanised regions.
Shallow water, exposed mudflats, temporarily inundated fields and marsh vegetation provide feeding opportunities for numerous waders during migration. Sandpipers probe mud and shallow water for insects, worms, molluscs, crustaceans and other small organisms, allowing even relatively small wetland patches to function as valuable refuelling sites during long journeys.
The latest Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was observed during a period of active migration in late August and early September, when passage migrants begin moving through northern India. Najafgarh lies within the wider Central Asian Flyway landscape, although the Sharp-tailed Sandpiper itself normally migrates much farther east.
Its appearance therefore demonstrates how major wetlands can occasionally provide refuge to birds that have strayed far beyond their expected migration corridors.
Another Rare Migrant Appears at Najafgarh
The Sharp-tailed Sandpiper was not the only unusual migratory bird reported from the Najafgarh landscape during the period. Birdwatchers had also documented a Rustic Bunting only days earlier, adding to a growing collection of uncommon species recorded from the wetland.
Such records make Najafgarh particularly valuable for ornithological monitoring. Wetlands situated along major migratory landscapes can function as temporary stopping places rather than permanent wintering areas, meaning some species may remain only for hours or days before continuing their journeys.
Repeated observation is therefore essential because occasional migrants can easily pass through without being detected.
Sharp-Tailed Sandpipers Are Under Growing Pressure
The conservation significance of the sighting extends beyond its rarity in India. Sharp-tailed Sandpiper populations have experienced substantial declines across their normal range.
An assessment by the Australian Government’s Threatened Species Scientific Committee estimated an approximately 45% population decline over three generations, or roughly 15 years, and found the species eligible for classification as Vulnerable under Australian conservation legislation.
Habitat degradation is one of the principal concerns. Migratory shorebirds depend on a chain of wetlands spread across thousands of kilometres, meaning destruction or deterioration of even a relatively small number of important stopover locations can affect survival across the entire population.
Coastal development, aquaculture, industrialisation and changing sediment systems have transformed many wetlands along East Asia’s migration routes. Climate change, drought and changing water regimes are creating additional pressures on inland wetlands in the species’ Australian wintering range.
Small Wetlands Can Have Global Importance
The Najafgarh observation also illustrates a broader lesson in migratory-bird conservation. Wetlands on the edges of major cities can sometimes appear fragmented or heavily altered, yet they may still form part of international ecological networks used by birds travelling between continents.
For a bird capable of migrating more than 10,000 kilometres, a shallow flooded field or marsh can provide the food required to continue an extraordinarily demanding journey.
Protecting such habitats therefore benefits more than locally resident wildlife. It can contribute to the survival of species whose annual movements connect Siberia, East Asia, India and Australasia.
The appearance of a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper at Najafgarh does not mean the species is becoming a regular Indian migrant. Its extreme rarity suggests precisely the opposite. What the record does demonstrate is the extraordinary ability of wetlands around Delhi-NCR to attract and sustain birds arriving from distant parts of the world.
For Indian birdwatchers and ornithologists, the 2026 observation adds another valuable data point to a record extending back almost a century and a half. For conservationists, it provides another reminder that even wetlands surrounded by expanding cities can retain ecological importance far beyond their geographical boundaries.
