India’s largest iron ore producer NMDC Limited has achieved an important commissioning milestone at its 2-million-tonne-per-annum iron ore pellet plant at Nagarnar in Chhattisgarh, successfully lighting up the facility’s Straight Grate Indurating Machine and beginning its dry-out process.
The light-up was carried out on August 28, 2026, by NMDC Director (Technical) Vinay Kumar and Director (Commercial) Vivek Nishant Nath. NMDC announced the development on August 29, describing it as an important step towards the commissioning and operationalisation of the Nagarnar pelletisation facility.
The development is particularly significant because the indurating machine forms the technological heart of a straight-grate pellet plant. Once fully commissioned, the Nagarnar facility will be capable of producing around 2 million tonnes of iron ore pellets annually, expanding NMDC’s presence further down the iron ore value chain.
Indurating Machine Reaches Key Commissioning Stage
At the centre of the Nagarnar plant is the Straight Grate Indurating Machine, where freshly formed or “green” iron ore pellets undergo controlled thermal treatment before becoming strong enough for use in iron and steel production.
The process involves carefully controlled stages of drying, preheating, high-temperature induration and cooling. These thermal stages transform relatively fragile green pellets into mechanically strong iron ore pellets capable of withstanding transportation, handling and the demanding conditions encountered during metallurgical processing.
NMDC described the indurating machine as the heart of the pelletisation process, noting that it is responsible for converting green pellets into high-strength material suitable for metallurgical use.
The successful light-up is therefore much more than the ceremonial ignition of a piece of equipment. It marks the beginning of an important sequence of thermal commissioning activities needed before the plant can begin processing material on a sustained basis.
Dry-Out Process Begins
Following the light-up, NMDC commenced the dry-out of the indurating machine.
Large high-temperature industrial systems contain refractory materials and other heat-resistant components that must be gradually conditioned before they can safely operate at normal process temperatures. The dry-out procedure progressively removes retained moisture and prepares the thermal system for later commissioning stages.
The process has to be conducted carefully because rapidly exposing new refractory structures to high temperatures can cause thermal damage or cracking.
Completion of the dry-out will therefore clear an important technical hurdle before the plant proceeds towards further hot commissioning and eventual production.
NMDC has described the commencement of this stage as a major milestone towards commissioning the pellet plant.
Metso Outotec–SMS Group Technology at the Core
The Straight Grate Indurating Machine installed at Nagarnar is based on technology supplied by Metso Outotec–SMS Group, while Indian engineering major Larsen & Toubro Limited is executing the project.
Straight-grate pelletisation technology is widely used to convert beneficiated iron ore concentrates and fines into uniform pellets suitable for downstream steelmaking.
The system allows temperature, airflow and residence time to be controlled through different zones of the indurating machine so that the pellets acquire the required strength and metallurgical properties.
The Nagarnar project therefore combines specialised global pelletisation technology with large-scale Indian engineering and project execution.
Turning Iron Ore Fines Into Higher-Value Material
The strategic importance of the project lies in value addition.
Iron ore mining does not produce only large lumps of ore suitable for direct use. Mining, crushing and beneficiation also generate large quantities of smaller particles and fines.
Pelletisation enables these finer iron-bearing materials to be processed into uniformly sized spherical pellets. After beneficiation and mixing with appropriate binders, the fine material is rolled into green pellets and then hardened inside the indurating machine.
The resulting pellets have better physical characteristics for transportation and use in metallurgical processes than untreated fine ore.
They can be used as feed material in blast furnaces and direct-reduction ironmaking processes, depending on their grade and specifications.
By expanding pellet production, NMDC can therefore move beyond simply mining and selling iron ore and create a higher-value processed product for the steel industry.
2 Million Tonnes of Annual Pellet Capacity
Once commissioned at rated capacity, the Nagarnar facility will have the ability to produce approximately 2 million tonnes of pellets every year.
The project forms part of NMDC’s long-standing programme to expand beneficiation, pelletisation and mineral-processing infrastructure alongside its core mining operations.
NMDC had identified the 2-MTPA Nagarnar Pellet Plant among its major value-addition projects well before the current commissioning phase.
The additional pellet capacity could become increasingly important as Indian steelmakers seek larger quantities of consistent-quality iron-bearing feedstock and the domestic steel industry expands towards substantially higher production levels.
Pellets can also help make better use of iron ore fines that might otherwise have a lower commercial value.
Nagarnar Emerging as a Major Metallurgical Hub
Nagarnar, near Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh’s Bastar region, has emerged as an important centre within India’s iron and steel infrastructure.
The location is already home to the 3-MTPA integrated steel plant operated by NMDC Steel Limited, while NMDC retains major mining and mineral-processing operations across the surrounding mineral-rich region.
The pellet plant adds another important element to this industrial ecosystem by converting iron ore into a processed feedstock required by steelmaking operations.
Its location in Chhattisgarh also places the facility relatively close to NMDC’s major iron ore mining operations in the Bailadila region.
The broader NMDC infrastructure strategy has included beneficiation facilities, enhanced loading systems and a proposed slurry pipeline connecting the Bailadila region with Nagarnar, all intended to make movement and processing of iron ore more efficient. NMDC has previously identified the Nagarnar pellet plant alongside these projects within its expansion programme.
Pelletisation Becomes More Important as Steel Production Expands
India’s rapidly expanding steel sector requires not only more iron ore but also more efficient utilisation of the ore that is mined.
Pelletisation is important in this context because it enables fine iron ore particles to be converted into a product with consistent size, strength and chemical characteristics.
Producing more pellets can also encourage beneficiation of lower-grade ore and fines, improving overall resource utilisation.
For a country with ambitious plans to substantially expand steel capacity, such processing infrastructure becomes increasingly important. Greater beneficiation and pelletisation can help ensure that growth in steel output is supported by an efficient domestic raw-material supply chain.
NMDC’s Nagarnar project therefore has significance beyond the immediate addition of two million tonnes of production capacity.
It represents a broader transition towards extracting greater value from India’s mineral resources before they enter the steelmaking chain.
A Significant Step, but Commercial Production Still Ahead
The August 28 light-up should not be confused with the commencement of full commercial pellet production.
The plant must still pass through additional commissioning stages after the dry-out process before it can operate reliably at commercial scale.
Complex industrial plants are generally commissioned progressively, with individual equipment and subsystems tested before integrated operation begins. Performance must then be stabilised and production gradually increased towards rated capacity.
The current milestone nevertheless demonstrates that one of the most critical pieces of equipment has entered its thermal commissioning phase.
Once the indurating machine and supporting systems successfully complete this process, NMDC will move substantially closer to introducing material and producing finished pellets.
Expanding NMDC Beyond Conventional Mining
The Nagarnar pellet project also illustrates NMDC’s continuing evolution from a predominantly iron ore mining company towards a wider mineral-processing and value-addition enterprise.
NMDC remains one of India’s most important suppliers of iron ore, particularly through its large operations in Chhattisgarh and Karnataka. Its future strategy, however, increasingly includes beneficiation, pelletisation, slurry transportation, strategic minerals and other downstream activities.
Pelletisation can improve the commercial value of mined material while creating a more integrated supply chain linking mines with steel producers.
Such processing capacity can also strengthen the ability of Indian mining companies to respond to changing requirements from steelmakers, particularly as technologies such as direct-reduced iron become more significant.
Bastar Gains Another Major Industrial Asset
The project carries regional significance as well.
The Bastar region possesses some of India’s richest iron ore deposits and has supplied the domestic steel industry for decades. Increasing the amount of processing carried out closer to the mineral source can create additional industrial activity rather than limiting the region primarily to extraction.
Large mineral-processing facilities create demand for engineering services, maintenance, transportation, skilled workers, electrical infrastructure and supporting industries.
Nagarnar’s emergence as a steel and mineral-processing centre therefore has the potential to deepen industrial activity in southern Chhattisgarh while connecting the region more closely with India’s national steel value chain.
Moving Towards Operationalisation
The successful light-up of the Straight Grate Indurating Machine is ultimately a technical commissioning milestone, but it represents an important point in a much larger industrial project.
NMDC has now begun preparing the central thermal processing unit of its 2-MTPA pellet plant for operation. With controlled drying, preheating, induration and cooling eventually taking place inside this machine, virtually every finished pellet produced at Nagarnar will pass through the equipment that was fired up for commissioning on August 28.
The next stages will determine how quickly NMDC can progress from equipment commissioning to actual pellet production and subsequently ramp the plant towards its rated capacity.
Once operational, the facility will give NMDC additional ability to convert iron ore fines into a higher-value metallurgical product while supporting the growing raw-material requirements of India’s steel sector.
For Nagarnar and the wider Bastar mineral belt, the project represents another step towards converting the region’s enormous iron ore resources into increasingly sophisticated industrial products within India itself.
