Indian defence technology company MKU Limited plans to establish a manufacturing facility in Morocco’s SGZID Zone in Nouasser, expanding its overseas industrial footprint and adding a new dimension to the growing defence partnership between India and Morocco.
The facility is expected to manufacture electro-optic systems and armour solutions for the Moroccan market while also supporting exports to customers across Africa and potentially Europe. MKU has indicated that further details on the plant’s exact location, investment, scale and implementation timeline will be announced later.
Netro Optronics and Kavro Protection to Form the Core
The proposed Moroccan facility is expected to manufacture products from MKU’s Netro Optronics and Kavro Protection portfolios.
Netro Optronics covers multi-sensor electro-optic systems used for surveillance, reconnaissance, situational awareness and target acquisition. These systems are increasingly important for modern armed forces because they improve battlefield visibility across day, night and adverse weather conditions.
Kavro Protection focuses on personnel and platform protection. Its portfolio includes body armour, ballistic helmets, shields and armour solutions for military vehicles and other platforms.
Bringing both product lines into a local manufacturing ecosystem would give the Moroccan project a broader industrial role than a simple assembly facility.
Existing Moroccan Military Relationship Provides a Base
MKU has already developed a relationship with Morocco’s armed forces through the supply of optronics and protection systems.
The company has previously supplied more than 1,000 thermal weapon sights to the Moroccan Army, giving it an established operational presence in the market before the proposed move into local manufacturing.
The new facility would therefore represent a shift from conventional equipment supply towards longer-term industrial participation.
Local Manufacturing and Technology Transfer
MKU has said the Moroccan project will involve the transfer of production capabilities and technical expertise.
This could support the development of local manufacturing skills while creating specialised employment for engineers, technicians and production personnel.
Local production can also improve delivery timelines, maintenance support and lifecycle services by placing technical capability closer to the customer.
For Morocco, the project would contribute to its wider effort to build domestic defence manufacturing capacity rather than depending entirely on imported finished systems.
Morocco to Become a Regional Manufacturing Base
The Moroccan plant is expected to serve not only domestic requirements but also act as a regional production and export base.
MKU sees Morocco as a platform for serving customers across Africa, while the country’s proximity to Europe provides additional long-term commercial potential.
This regional role could make the facility strategically important within MKU’s wider international manufacturing network.
The company already operates across several overseas markets and has pursued localisation through partnerships and manufacturing arrangements outside India.
India-Morocco Defence Cooperation Is Deepening
The MKU announcement comes against the backdrop of rapidly expanding India-Morocco defence cooperation.
The two countries signed a defence cooperation agreement in September 2025, creating a broader framework for military exchanges, training and defence-industrial collaboration.
This was followed by the first India-Morocco Joint Defence Committee meeting in New Delhi in September 2026, where the two sides discussed co-production, joint ventures, technology collaboration, maintenance and sustainment.
These mechanisms provide the institutional foundation required for private Indian defence companies to consider long-term industrial investments in Morocco.
Tata’s Berrechid Facility Set the Precedent
The path for Indian defence manufacturing in Morocco was already established by Tata Advanced Systems Limited.
Tata inaugurated a facility at Berrechid to manufacture the WhAP 8×8 Wheeled Armoured Platform, developed jointly with the Defence Research and Development Organisation.
That project demonstrated that India-Morocco defence relations had moved beyond exports into local production.
MKU’s proposed facility would broaden this footprint from armoured vehicles into electro-optics, soldier protection and platform armour.
Morocco’s Defence Industrial Ambitions Are Expanding
Morocco has been steadily developing its domestic defence industry by encouraging foreign investment, localisation and technology partnerships.
Its strategy is aimed at creating local production capability, strengthening supply chains and building an industrial base that can support both national requirements and regional exports.
This creates an attractive environment for Indian defence companies looking to combine overseas manufacturing with market access.
From Defence Exports to Overseas Manufacturing
India’s defence export growth has largely been driven by products manufactured at home and sold abroad. The Morocco model introduces a different approach in which Indian-developed defence technologies are produced within partner-country industrial ecosystems.
For MKU, this can reduce supply-chain distances, improve support for local customers and create a stronger long-term presence in overseas markets.
The Moroccan facility also reflects a broader shift in India’s defence-industrial engagement, from equipment sales towards co-production, technology transfer and regional manufacturing partnerships.
As Tata and MKU expand their presence in Morocco, the country is emerging as an important overseas base for Indian defence manufacturing in Africa.
