Ministry of Defence Signs ₹770 Crore Contract with BEL for Advanced Low-Level Radars to Strengthen Indian Army Air Defence

The Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar is designed to detect and track aerial targets operating in the low-altitude environment. According to the Ministry of Defence, the system can detect fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones.

The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth approximately ₹770 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army. The agreement, signed in New Delhi on October 21, 2026, represents an important step towards strengthening the Army’s air defence capabilities against emerging aerial threats, particularly unmanned aerial systems.

The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The indigenous radar systems will enhance the Indian Army’s ability to detect, track and prioritise aerial targets, including fighter aircraft and small drones.

The procurement also supports India’s ongoing efforts to expand domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported military equipment.

Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar to Enhance Aerial Threat Detection

The Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar is designed to detect and track aerial targets operating in the low-altitude environment. According to the Ministry of Defence, the system can detect fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones.

The ability to detect smaller unmanned aerial platforms is particularly important as drones become increasingly prominent in modern military operations. Their relatively small size and operational characteristics create additional challenges for conventional air defence surveillance systems.

The LLLR-I provides the Indian Army with an improved capability to monitor aerial threats across different categories of targets. Its ability to track fighter-sized aircraft and smaller unmanned systems makes it relevant to the evolving requirements of battlefield air defence.

By strengthening low-level aerial surveillance, the system will contribute to greater situational awareness and support the Army’s ability to respond to potential airborne threats.

Target Prioritisation to Improve Army Air Defence Operations

One of the important capabilities highlighted by the Ministry of Defence is the radar’s ability to prioritise detected aerial targets.

Modern air defence environments may involve multiple airborne objects operating simultaneously, including aircraft and unmanned aerial platforms. Identifying and tracking these targets is essential for maintaining an accurate understanding of the surrounding airspace.

Target prioritisation helps air defence personnel distinguish between detected threats and assess their relative operational importance.

The Improved Low Level Light Weight Radar will support this requirement by providing target detection, tracking and prioritisation capabilities within a single surveillance system.

These functions can strengthen the effectiveness of the Indian Army’s air defence operations by supporting more informed and timely responses to emerging aerial threats.

Strengthening Counter-Drone Capabilities of the Indian Army

The procurement assumes particular importance because of the growing use of unmanned aerial systems in contemporary military operations.

Mini and micro drones are increasingly used for reconnaissance, surveillance and other military applications. Their small physical dimensions can make detection challenging, particularly in complex operational environments.

The Ministry of Defence has specifically identified the LLLR-I’s ability to detect and track these smaller platforms as an important capability for countering unmanned aerial threats.

By improving the detection and tracking of drones, the radar systems will strengthen the surveillance component of the Indian Army’s counter-UAS capabilities.

The procurement reflects the increasing importance of developing air defence systems capable of addressing both conventional aircraft and emerging unmanned aerial threats.

Bharat Electronics Limited Strengthens Its Role in Indigenous Air Defence Systems

The ₹770 crore contract further strengthens Bharat Electronics Limited’s position as a major supplier of indigenous electronic systems to India’s armed forces.

BEL, a Defence Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, plays an important role in the development and manufacture of defence electronics, including radar systems, communication equipment, electronic warfare technologies and other military electronic systems.

The latest contract adds to the company’s contribution to India’s domestic air defence manufacturing ecosystem.

The procurement also provides opportunities for Indian component manufacturers, engineering enterprises and specialised technology suppliers associated with the defence electronics industry.

Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises form an important part of this ecosystem by supporting component production, precision engineering, electronics manufacturing and associated industrial activities.

The contract is expected to reinforce domestic defence supply chains while supporting the continued development of indigenous radar manufacturing capabilities.

Indigenous Radar Procurement Supports Aatmanirbhar Bharat

The Ministry of Defence has linked the procurement to the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 and its broader objective of building a self-reliant defence industry.

Indigenous development and manufacturing of air defence systems are important elements of India’s efforts to strengthen technological independence in critical military capabilities.

Radar technologies require specialised expertise in electronic engineering, signal processing, system integration and military-grade manufacturing. Expanding domestic capabilities in these areas contributes to the development of a stronger defence industrial base.

Procurement from Indian manufacturers also supports the participation of domestic suppliers and MSMEs in the production of advanced military equipment.

The LLLR-I contract therefore represents more than the acquisition of additional radar systems. It contributes to India’s efforts to create a resilient defence manufacturing ecosystem capable of meeting the evolving technological requirements of the armed forces.

Indian Army Advances Towards Stronger Indigenous Air Defence

The ₹770 crore procurement of Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars marks another step in the modernisation of the Indian Army’s air defence surveillance capabilities.

The systems will strengthen the Army’s ability to detect and track fighter-sized aerial targets, mini drones and micro drones while providing an additional capability for target prioritisation.

As unmanned aerial systems continue to influence military operations, reliable detection and surveillance technologies are becoming increasingly important components of modern air defence.

The contract reinforces the Indian Army’s focus on strengthening its counter-drone capabilities through indigenous technology. It also supports Bharat Electronics Limited and India’s wider defence manufacturing ecosystem in developing advanced military electronics.

Through investments in domestically manufactured surveillance systems, India continues to strengthen the technological foundations of its armed forces while advancing its objective of a self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.
