Lakshadweep Set to Get Space Museum as VSSC Expands ISRO Outreach to the Islands

Lakshadweep is set to strengthen its science and space-education infrastructure with plans for a new space museum, as the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre expands ISRO’s outreach activities across the islands. The proposed facility could provide students and the public with permanent access to exhibits explaining India’s launch vehicles, satellites, space missions and emerging technologies.

Efforts have begun to establish a space museum in Lakshadweep as part of a wider push to bring India’s space programme closer to students and communities in the island territory. The initiative comes against the backdrop of sustained outreach by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), one of the Indian Space Research Organisation’s principal centres.

The proposal is particularly significant for Lakshadweep because access to major science museums and research institutions generally requires students to travel to the mainland. A permanent space museum within the Union Territory could provide a local centre for science education while giving young visitors an opportunity to understand India’s achievements in launch vehicles, satellites and planetary exploration.

Detailed information about the museum’s final location, project cost, construction schedule and exhibits has not yet been released through an official ISRO project document. These details are therefore expected to become clearer as the proposal advances.

VSSC Has Been Expanding Outreach Across Lakshadweep

The museum proposal builds on several years of ISRO outreach in the islands.

VSSC is the lead ISRO centre for National Space Day activities in a zone covering Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahe. It works with the Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, ISRO Inertial Systems Unit and Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology to conduct exhibitions, workshops and public-engagement programmes.

Lakshadweep has already hosted space-science events under this programme. During National Space Day activities in 2025, VSSC organised workshops at Kavaratti, Minicoy and Amini, where students received exposure to satellites, launch vehicles, space applications and future ISRO missions. The programmes included technical sessions, demonstrations, exhibitions, quizzes and interactions with experts.

Similar activities were conducted in 2024, when Lakshadweep hosted both an exhibition and a one-day workshop as part of ISRO’s National Space Day programme. Schools and institutions across Kerala, Lakshadweep and Mahe also conducted activities with ISRO support.

The establishment of a permanent museum would therefore represent a natural progression from periodic exhibitions towards a year-round educational facility.

Bringing India’s Space Programme Closer to Island Students

A space museum can provide a very different experience from learning through textbooks alone.

ISRO museums and exhibitions typically use launch-vehicle models, satellite displays, mission information, audiovisual material and interactive exhibits to explain how India’s space programme developed. VSSC says exhibitions form an important part of its public outreach and are intended to help people understand India’s achievements in space science and technology.

VSSC’s existing Space Museum at Thumba in Thiruvananthapuram is already open to the public. The centre also uses the museum during student programmes and open-house events to demonstrate India’s space heritage and current capabilities.

A similar educational approach in Lakshadweep could introduce students to subjects ranging from rocket propulsion and satellite communications to remote sensing, navigation and human spaceflight.

The facility could also help explain how space technology directly affects island communities. Satellite communications, weather forecasting, cyclone monitoring, navigation, ocean studies and Earth observation all have particular relevance to remote island territories.

Kavaratti Already Has a Planetarium Modernisation Plan

The proposed space museum also comes as Lakshadweep works to improve its existing astronomy infrastructure.

The Lakshadweep Administration has proposed the phased modernisation of the planetarium at Kavaratti Island. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on August 20, 2025, the government said an assessment had recommended upgrading the planetarium’s projection system, computers and software. The first phase was estimated at approximately ₹2.12 crore.

The government said at the time that the final timeline and implementing agency would be determined by the Science and Technology Department of the Lakshadweep Administration.

It has not yet been officially established whether the proposed space museum will form part of the Kavaratti planetarium complex or emerge as a separate project. Until further details are released, the two initiatives should be treated as distinct developments.

Together, however, they point towards a broader effort to improve access to science education and public scientific infrastructure in the islands.

Space Museums as Science-Education Centres

ISRO has increasingly used museums, exhibitions and digital resources to connect the public with India’s space programme.

In addition to physical facilities, ISRO launched its SPARK virtual space museum in 2022. The platform provides interactive access to documents, photographs and videos covering Indian satellites, launch vehicles and space missions.

Physical museums offer an additional advantage because students can view scale models, hardware and mission displays within an organised educational environment. Such facilities can also host lectures, demonstrations, competitions and interactions with scientists.

For Lakshadweep, this could create a permanent platform for programmes that VSSC has so far conducted mainly through periodic workshops and exhibitions.

Building Scientific Curiosity in a Remote Region

The wider objective goes beyond displaying rockets and satellites.

India has been expanding science outreach programmes in Lakshadweep through initiatives aimed at school students. The Department of Science and Technology has already supported programmes such as the National Children’s Science Congress and INSPIRE-MANAK in schools across the islands.

A space museum could complement those efforts by giving students a permanent venue where science, engineering and India’s space achievements are presented together.

For young people growing up far from India’s major aerospace centres, direct exposure to the country’s space programme could help make careers in science and engineering appear more accessible.

The museum could also become an additional educational attraction for visitors to Lakshadweep, complementing the territory’s existing cultural institutions such as the Golden Jubilee Museum at Agatti.

As India expands its ambitions in human spaceflight, planetary exploration, launch vehicles and satellite technology, public understanding of those programmes will become increasingly important.

The proposed Lakshadweep space museum represents a relatively small piece of that larger effort, but its location gives it particular significance. By taking space education beyond India’s major cities and research centres and into one of the country’s most geographically isolated territories, VSSC’s initiative could give a new generation of students a much closer connection to India’s journey into space.
