Jan Aushadhi Expands Affordable Nutrition Support Beyond Generic Medicines

The Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana is widening its role in public healthcare by making a growing range of affordable nutraceuticals available alongside generic medicines. Jan Aushadhi Kendras now offer products such as protein supplements, malt-based nutritional formulations, immunity-support products, women-focused nutrition and specialised preparations developed for people with diabetes or kidney-related dietary requirements.

The expansion reflects an effort to address a frequently overlooked part of healthcare expenditure. While medicines form a major share of treatment costs, patients recovering from illness, older people, pregnant women and those managing chronic conditions may also require nutritional supplementation. Commercially branded products in these categories can be expensive, especially when they must be consumed regularly.

Nutrition Added to the Jan Aushadhi Basket

The Jan Aushadhi nutraceutical portfolio includes general protein powders, women’s protein formulations, whey-protein products, fortified malt-based foods, protein bars and immunity-support products. The scheme has also introduced condition-specific formulations such as diabetes-care protein powder, low-protein renal-care powder and higher-protein formulations intended for dialysis patients.

Women-focused products include flavoured protein powders and nutritional formulations intended to supplement dietary requirements during stages when additional nutrition may be needed. Fortified products under the Jan Aushadhi Poshan range contain combinations of proteins, vitamins and minerals designed to support general nutrition and growth.

This diversification allows Jan Aushadhi Kendras to function as broader affordable-healthcare outlets rather than stores limited exclusively to generic pharmaceutical products.

Addressing the Cost of Long-Term Nutrition

People managing diabetes, kidney disease and other chronic conditions often require carefully planned diets. Specialised commercial nutrition products can add significantly to monthly household expenses, particularly when used over long periods.

By providing lower-cost alternatives through a government-supported distribution network, the programme seeks to improve access for patients who might otherwise reduce or discontinue recommended nutritional support because of cost.

However, specialised formulations are not interchangeable. Low-protein renal products and higher-protein products intended for dialysis patients serve different dietary requirements. Patients with diabetes, kidney disease, pregnancy-related nutritional needs or other medical conditions should use such products only after consulting a doctor or qualified dietitian.

More Than 20,000 Kendras Across India

As of June 30, 2026, 20,149 Jan Aushadhi Kendras had been opened across the country. The PMBJP product basket comprised 2,110 medicines and 315 surgical products, medical consumables and devices, covering major therapeutic categories as well as nutraceuticals.

Medicines supplied under the scheme are generally priced around 50 to 80 per cent below comparable branded medicines. During 2025–26, products with a total maximum retail price value of ₹2,252.19 crore were sold through the programme. Sales worth ₹474.40 crore were recorded during the first three months of 2026–27.

An official assessment estimated that the scheme had generated savings of approximately ₹45,000 crore for citizens over the previous 12 years, compared with the cost of branded alternatives. The expansion of Kendras has also improved access in smaller towns, rural regions and underserved areas.

Quality and Affordability

The Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India implements the scheme under the Department of Pharmaceuticals. According to the official Jan Aushadhi platform, medicines are procured from manufacturers meeting World Health Organization Good Manufacturing Practices requirements, while batches are tested through laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories before distribution.

These safeguards are important because the programme’s success depends not only on low prices but also on public confidence. Generic medicines contain the same active pharmaceutical ingredients as their branded equivalents, while nutraceuticals are intended to supplement nutrition rather than replace prescribed treatment or a balanced diet.

Strengthening Preventive and Supportive Healthcare

The inclusion of nutraceuticals represents a gradual shift in the Jan Aushadhi model. The programme is moving beyond reducing medicine costs towards supporting preventive care, recovery, maternal nutrition and chronic-disease management.

Affordable protein products, fortified foods and condition-specific formulations can be especially valuable for lower-income households, senior citizens and patients requiring prolonged nutritional support. Their availability through a nationwide network also provides consumers with a more accessible alternative to premium commercial brands.

The expanded portfolio therefore strengthens the original objective of Jan Aushadhi: reducing out-of-pocket healthcare expenditure while ensuring that essential health products remain within the reach of ordinary citizens.
