Jammu & Kashmir Begins Organised Mineral Development with Auction of Two Limestone Blocks

The auction marks the first time mineral blocks in the Union Territory have been awarded under the Central Government’s mineral auction process. It opens the way for systematic exploration, investment and commercial development of identified mineral resources.

Jammu & Kashmir has taken a significant step towards organised mineral development with the successful auction of two limestone blocks in Anantnag district through the Ministry of Mines.

The auction marks the first time mineral blocks in the Union Territory have been awarded under the Central Government’s mineral auction process. It opens the way for systematic exploration, investment and commercial development of identified mineral resources.

Two Limestone Blocks Auctioned in Anantnag

The first block, Koot-Kapran, is located in Koot and Kapran villages of Dooru Tehsil in Anantnag district.

It covers 22.43 hectares and contains estimated limestone resources of 4.75 million tonnes. The block has been explored to the G-4 stage, which provides a preliminary geological understanding while leaving scope for more detailed exploration.

The second block, Wantrag, covers 5.36 hectares and contains estimated limestone resources of 10.853 million tonnes.

The Wantrag block has been explored to the G-3 stage, with 159 metres of drilling already completed. This gives the block a stronger geological basis for subsequent exploration and development.

Transparent Auction Process Introduced

The Government of Jammu & Kashmir had entrusted the auction of these mineral blocks to the Ministry of Mines.

Their successful allocation brings the Union Territory into the competitive mineral auction framework used for the development of mineral resources elsewhere in India.

The process is intended to improve transparency, encourage investment and create a structured pathway for exploration and commercial mining.

Limestone Development Can Support Local Economic Activity

Development of the two blocks could generate activity across mining, transport, equipment supply, maintenance, logistics and other supporting services.

Local enterprises and service providers may also benefit as exploration and mining operations expand. Over time, the emergence of a formal mineral ecosystem can help convert geological resources into wider economic activity within the region.

Limestone is an important industrial mineral used extensively in cement production, construction materials and other manufacturing processes, giving these deposits potential relevance to infrastructure-linked industries.

Mineral Development Adds New Dimension to J&K Economy

The auction comes amid a broader push to expand infrastructure, investment and economic activity across Jammu & Kashmir.

A structured mineral sector can complement these efforts by attracting new capital, encouraging local participation and creating additional avenues for value creation from naturally occurring resources.

The Ministry of Mines has said it will continue working with the Jammu & Kashmir administration to support transparent, sustainable and responsible development of the Union Territory’s mineral resources.

The successful auction of the Koot-Kapran and Wantrag blocks therefore establishes the foundation for a more organised mining sector in Jammu & Kashmir and gives the Union Territory a new platform for investment-led industrial development.
