India’s renewable energy installed capacity has increased nearly fourfold over the past 12 years, rising from 76.38 gigawatts in 2014 to 288.58 gigawatts as of June 30, 2026, according to information presented in the Rajya Sabha.
Solar power has emerged as the largest contributor to the country’s renewable energy portfolio, with an installed capacity of 162.15 gigawatts. Wind power accounts for 57.44 gigawatts, while hydropower contributes 57.24 gigawatts. Bio-power projects have added another 11.75 gigawatts, taking the total renewable energy capacity to 288.58 gigawatts.
India’s overall electricity-generation capacity from non-fossil fuel sources reached 297.36 gigawatts by the end of June 2026. This includes 288.58 gigawatts from renewable energy projects and 8.78 gigawatts from nuclear power facilities.
The expansion reflects India’s sustained investment in solar parks, wind farms, hydropower projects, bioenergy facilities and supporting transmission infrastructure. The rapid growth of solar power has played a central role in accelerating the country’s transition towards cleaner sources of electricity.
The renewable energy sector has also attracted significant domestic and international financing. Between the financial years 2014 and 2026, the sector received approximately US$45.72 billion in foreign direct investment.
During the same period, domestic financial institutions deployed around ₹12.32 lakh crore towards renewable energy development. The institutions included 12 public-sector banks, the Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency, Power Finance Corporation, REC Limited, India Infrastructure Finance Company Limited, the National Bank for Financing Infrastructure and Development, and the Small Industries Development Bank of India.
The financing has supported the development of renewable power plants, transmission systems, energy-storage projects, manufacturing facilities and other infrastructure required for expanding India’s clean-energy ecosystem.
The figures were provided by Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy Shripad Yesso Naik in a written reply to a question in the Rajya Sabha on July 21, 2026.
