Indian Army to Get Indigenous Loitering Munitions Under ₹1,577 Crore Tata-NIBE Contracts

The contracts were signed in New Delhi on 14 August 2026 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement covers the loitering munition systems themselves, along with associated munitions and other accessories required for their operational deployment.

India has taken another step towards strengthening indigenous precision-strike capabilities, with the Ministry of Defence signing contracts worth approximately ₹1,577 crore with Tata Advanced Systems Limited and NIBE Private Limited for Loiter Munition Systems for the Indian Army.

The contracts were signed in New Delhi on 14 August 2026 in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The procurement covers the loitering munition systems themselves, along with associated munitions and other accessories required for their operational deployment.

Loitering Munitions to Strengthen Army Artillery

The new systems are intended primarily to enhance the capabilities of the Indian Army’s Artillery Regiments.

Unlike conventional artillery ammunition, a loitering munition can remain airborne over a designated area while searching for or waiting for a target. Once a suitable target is identified, the munition can engage it directly, combining surveillance and strike functions in a single system.

The Defence Ministry described the equipment as critical for improving the operational effectiveness of artillery formations. DD News similarly reported that the acquisition is intended to improve the ability of artillery units to identify and engage targets on the battlefield.

This gives artillery commanders another precision-strike option alongside conventional guns, rockets and missiles, particularly against targets that may appear only briefly or change their position.

Procured Under Buy (Indian) Category

Significantly, the systems are being acquired under the Buy (Indian) category through the Fast Track Procedure.

The procurement route places the order within India’s domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem while allowing the Army to obtain the required capability on an accelerated schedule. The Ministry said the acquisition would also strengthen Indian industrial manufacturing capabilities.

The contracts therefore combine an operational requirement with the broader objective of increasing indigenous defence production under Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

Tata Advanced Systems has emerged as one of India’s major private-sector defence manufacturers, while NIBE has been expanding its presence in indigenous defence systems. Their selection for the Army requirement also reflects the growing role of private Indian industry in supplying sophisticated battlefield equipment.

Loitering Munitions Changing Modern Battlefield

Modern battlefields increasingly demand the ability to detect, track and attack targets quickly.

Artillery units traditionally depend on separate reconnaissance assets to locate a target before guns, rockets or missiles engage it. Loitering munitions compress parts of this cycle by allowing an armed aerial system to remain in the target area until an engagement opportunity appears.

They can be particularly useful against mobile or time-sensitive targets, where a long delay between detection and engagement may allow the target to relocate.

Their ability to approach targets from the air also provides commanders with another means of conducting precision strikes without immediately committing aircraft or larger missile systems.

For the Indian Army, integrating such systems into artillery formations can therefore broaden the range of options available for surveillance-supported precision attack.

Fast-Track Procurement Reflects Operational Priority

The use of the Fast Track Procedure is also notable.

Such procurement is intended to accelerate the acquisition of equipment required to meet pressing operational needs. In this case, the Defence Ministry has specifically linked the acquisition to improving the capabilities and overall effectiveness of Artillery Regiments.

The official announcement, however, does not disclose the number of loitering munitions being procured, the individual value of the Tata and NIBE contracts, their range, endurance, warhead specifications or delivery schedule. Those details should therefore not be inferred from the ₹1,577 crore aggregate contract value.

Private Industry Moves Deeper into Precision Weapons

The order is significant for India’s defence-industrial ecosystem because loitering munitions sit at the intersection of unmanned systems, surveillance, navigation, communications and precision weapons.

Developing and manufacturing such systems domestically can create capabilities extending beyond the airframe itself. Sensors, datalinks, electronics, propulsion, warheads, launch equipment and command systems can all form part of the wider industrial supply chain.

The ₹1,577 crore procurement also illustrates the Indian Army’s growing willingness to source advanced battlefield systems from the domestic private sector rather than relying exclusively on traditional public-sector suppliers.

Expanding the Army’s Precision-Strike Layer

For the Army, the acquisition adds another layer to its evolving long-range and precision-strike architecture.

Conventional artillery will continue to provide sustained firepower, while rockets and missiles can strike targets at greater ranges. Loitering munitions occupy a different operational space by combining persistence over the battlefield with the ability to attack once an appropriate target emerges.

The Tata Advanced Systems and NIBE contracts are therefore important not only because of their ₹1,577 crore value, but because they demonstrate how India’s artillery modernisation is increasingly incorporating unmanned precision-strike technologies produced by domestic industry.

The Defence Ministry has described the procurement as a step towards both modernising the Indian Army and empowering India’s defence industry, reinforcing the wider shift towards domestically manufactured systems for critical operational requirements.
