India Sends Three Tonnes of Anti-Tuberculosis Medicines to Sri Lanka Aboard IAF C-130J

India has dispatched around three tonnes of anti-tuberculosis medicines to Sri Lanka as part of its continuing support for the island nation’s public health system.

The medicines were flown to Colombo on September 28, 2026, aboard an Indian Air Force C-130J transport aircraft. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the consignment reflected India’s commitment to supporting Sri Lanka’s healthcare requirements.

Anti-Tuberculosis Medicines Sent to Colombo

The latest assistance consists of approximately three tonnes of medicines intended to support Sri Lanka’s tuberculosis treatment and public health programmes.

The use of an Indian Air Force C-130J for the delivery underlines the priority attached to the consignment and enables rapid transportation of essential medical supplies to Colombo.

The assistance forms part of India’s broader Neighbourhood First approach and its continuing development and humanitarian partnership with Sri Lanka.

Health Cooperation Remains an Important Pillar

India and Sri Lanka already have a substantial record of cooperation in healthcare infrastructure, emergency medical support and public health.

On September 16, 2026, foundation stones were laid for Indian grant-assisted hospital projects in Mannar and Mullaitivu. The Mannar project includes construction of a two-storey Accident and Emergency Unit along with essential medical equipment intended to improve emergency treatment during the critical golden hour.

The Mullaitivu project includes a four-storey medical ward complex designed to expand patient screening and reduce avoidable referrals to other hospitals.

India Has Supported Multiple Sri Lankan Health Projects

India’s health-sector engagement in Sri Lanka extends well beyond individual medicine consignments.

Official Indian records highlight projects including the island-wide 1990 Suwa Seriya ambulance service, medical assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 150-bed multi-specialty hospital at Dickoya, support for Jaffna Teaching Hospital and district hospitals at Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu, and construction of a surgical unit at Batticaloa Teaching Hospital.

India has also provided earlier consignments of medical supplies to Sri Lanka, including assistance during periods of acute economic and healthcare pressure.

Development Partnership Extends Across Sri Lanka

India’s development cooperation with Sri Lanka now spans all 25 districts and covers sectors ranging from healthcare and housing to education, transport and community infrastructure.

According to the High Commission of India in Colombo, the overall development partnership exceeds $7.5 billion, including around $880 million in grant assistance.

This wide geographical and sectoral footprint has made healthcare one of the most visible areas of India-Sri Lanka people-centric cooperation.

Medical Assistance Strengthens India-Sri Lanka Partnership

The dispatch of three tonnes of anti-tuberculosis medicines adds another practical element to the growing India-Sri Lanka healthcare partnership.

By combining essential medicine supplies with hospital construction, emergency-care infrastructure and long-term public health projects, India is helping strengthen healthcare capacity in Sri Lanka while reinforcing a bilateral relationship built around direct benefits for communities.
