India and Singapore have opened a fresh chapter in their defence partnership, with both countries exploring wider cooperation in defence industry, emerging technologies and regional security during the 16th India-Singapore Defence Policy Dialogue held in Singapore on May 28, 2026. The dialogue was co-chaired by India’s Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh and Singapore’s Permanent Secretary for Defence Mr Joseph Leong.
The meeting reviewed the progress of ongoing defence engagements between the two countries and examined new areas where both sides can deepen practical cooperation. The discussions covered military exchanges, defence industry collaboration, capacity building and broader regional security issues. This makes the dialogue an important institutional platform for aligning India and Singapore’s defence priorities in a fast-changing Indo-Pacific environment.
A major focus of the talks was cooperation in emerging and niche domains. Both sides discussed cyber security, artificial intelligence, maritime security, unmanned systems and advanced defence technologies. These areas are becoming central to modern warfare, where digital networks, autonomous platforms, surveillance systems and real-time intelligence increasingly shape operational advantage.
The emphasis on maritime security is especially significant because both India and Singapore sit at crucial points of the Indo-Pacific security architecture. Singapore occupies a strategic location near the Malacca Strait, one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, while India plays a major role in the Indian Ocean Region. Stronger cooperation between the two countries can support safer sea lanes, better maritime awareness and wider coordination in regional security affairs.
The dialogue also underlined the importance of defence industry collaboration. India’s expanding defence manufacturing ecosystem and Singapore’s advanced technological capabilities create space for joint work in high-end systems, innovation, digital warfare tools and industry-to-industry partnerships. Such cooperation can support the development of future-ready defence capabilities suited to cyber, maritime and unmanned warfare environments.
India and Singapore also appreciated their cooperation in regional and multilateral platforms, including ASEAN-led mechanisms and the ASEAN Defence Ministers’ Meeting-Plus framework. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to an open, inclusive and rules-based regional security architecture in the Indo-Pacific.
The visit of India’s Defence Secretary to the Digital Operations Technology Centre of Singapore’s Digital and Intelligence Service added a strong technological dimension to the engagement. The visit offered India a closer view of Singapore Armed Forces’ digital and technical capabilities, especially in areas linked to modern networked warfare and future collaboration.
The 16th Defence Policy Dialogue reflects the maturity of India-Singapore defence ties. The relationship has moved beyond routine exchanges and now reaches into advanced domains such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, unmanned systems and digital military infrastructure. In the years ahead, this partnership can become a key pillar of India’s wider defence engagement with Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific.
