Hughes Precision Raises ₹250+ Crore to Expand Ammunition Manufacturing, Enters Medium-Calibre Segment

Goa-based defence manufacturer Hughes Precision Manufacturing has raised more than ₹250 crore as it prepares for a major expansion of its ammunition manufacturing operations in India. The investment will substantially increase the company’s small-calibre ammunition capacity while funding its entry into the medium-calibre ammunition segment.

The investment round combines primary and secondary investment from a group of ultra-high-net-worth individuals. Hughes Precision said the capital will support manufacturing expansion, new production capabilities and continued investment in technology, quality systems and workforce development.

The expansion comes as the company’s order book has crossed ₹1,000 crore, supported by demand from Indian government agencies as well as international customers. Hughes Precision is now moving from its established position in small-calibre ammunition towards a broader ammunition manufacturing platform serving multiple defence requirements.

Small-Calibre Capacity to Rise to 220 Million Rounds

A major portion of the expansion will increase Hughes Precision’s annual small-calibre ammunition manufacturing capacity from approximately 80 million rounds to 220 million rounds.

The company’s existing manufacturing facility is located at the Verna Industrial Estate in Goa. Hughes Precision currently operates an approximately 8,000-square-metre facility with integrated manufacturing, quality-control and testing infrastructure.

A new manufacturing facility covering approximately 40,000 square metres is under development as part of the expansion programme. Once operational, the additional infrastructure will allow Hughes Precision to handle larger production programmes and long-term supply requirements from domestic and international customers.

The capacity increase represents nearly a threefold expansion from the company’s present production capability and reflects the growing scale of private-sector participation in India’s ammunition industry.

Hughes Precision Enters Medium-Calibre Ammunition

The investment also marks an important change in the company’s product strategy. Hughes Precision plans to establish a dedicated manufacturing capability for medium-calibre ammunition, taking the company beyond the small-calibre segment that has formed the foundation of its operations.

A significant portion of the newly raised capital will be directed towards establishing this capability. The company expects the move to allow it to address a wider range of requirements from the Indian Armed Forces as well as approved international defence customers.

The medium-calibre programme represents the next stage of Hughes Precision’s development as an ammunition manufacturer. Instead of concentrating on a single ammunition category, the company is building manufacturing capabilities across multiple segments that can serve military and security requirements.

₹1,000-Crore Order Book Provides Demand Visibility

The expansion is backed by an order book that has already crossed ₹1,000 crore.

Hughes Precision disclosed in July 2026 that approximately 60 per cent of these orders originate from Indian government agencies, including the Indian Army, police and paramilitary forces. The remaining 40 per cent comprises export orders from international customers.

The existing order book is expected to be executed over approximately two years, providing the company with demand visibility while its additional manufacturing capacity is brought online.

Exports have become an important component of Hughes Precision’s business. The company says it supplies customers across more than 20 countries covering North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Asia.

The combination of Indian government requirements and international orders is shaping the company’s expansion strategy, with additional production capacity intended to serve both markets.

Goa Facility Emerges as a Larger Ammunition Manufacturing Hub

Hughes Precision has progressively expanded its manufacturing infrastructure at Verna Industrial Estate in Goa.

The company operates integrated manufacturing and testing facilities that allow ammunition production, quality control and performance validation to be conducted within the same industrial complex. The ongoing expansion will considerably increase the physical scale of these operations.

The new 40,000-square-metre facility is being developed specifically to support higher-volume production and the company’s growing domestic and international order pipeline.

The expansion also comes alongside increased investment in research and development. Hughes Precision’s in-house R&D unit received recognition from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology in March 2026.

That recognition covers an R&D operation associated with the company’s work in advanced ammunition technologies and provides another indication of the company’s attempt to develop indigenous design and manufacturing capabilities rather than function solely as a volume producer.

From Domestic Manufacturing to Defence Exports

Hughes Precision’s expansion reflects the changing structure of India’s ammunition manufacturing sector, where private companies are increasingly building production capacity alongside the country’s established public-sector defence manufacturers.

The company’s export business is particularly significant to this strategy. Hughes Precision received the Defence Export Performance award in the Medium Sector at the Society of Indian Defence Manufacturers Champion Awards in October 2025.

Its current order-book composition shows that exports are no longer a peripheral part of the company’s operations. With around 40 per cent of its ₹1,000-crore-plus order book coming from overseas customers, international demand is becoming one of the factors supporting additional manufacturing investment in Goa.

At the same time, the larger production base will provide additional capacity for requirements from the Indian Army and other government security organisations.

Building a Broader Indian Ammunition Platform

The ₹250+ crore investment represents more than an expansion of an existing ammunition production line. Hughes Precision is simultaneously increasing small-calibre output, constructing substantially larger manufacturing infrastructure and entering a new ammunition category.

Raising annual capacity from 80 million to 220 million rounds gives the company the ability to undertake significantly larger supply programmes, while the dedicated medium-calibre facility will expand the range of military requirements it can address.

The combination of a ₹1,000-crore-plus order book, a substantial export component and additional manufacturing capacity also illustrates the increasing scale being reached by sections of India’s private defence industry.

For Hughes Precision, the next stage will depend on converting this investment into production capacity and successfully establishing its medium-calibre manufacturing programme. If executed as planned, the expansion will transform its Goa operation from an established small-calibre ammunition facility into a substantially broader Indian ammunition manufacturing base.
