Government Expands Generative AI Skill Development Under IndiaAI Mission

The Government of India is strengthening artificial intelligence (AI) education and skill development through the IndiaAI Mission, with a strong focus on improving AI literacy and workforce readiness across the country.

Under the “IndiaAI FutureSkills” initiative, several programs have been introduced to promote awareness and foundational knowledge of AI. One such initiative, “YUVA AI for All,” aims to make AI concepts accessible to a broad range of learners. In addition, Data and AI Labs are being set up in NIELIT centres, ITIs, and polytechnics, especially in tier-2 and tier-3 cities, offering standardized training in areas like data annotation and data curation using Python.

The Skill India Digital Hub (SIDH) currently hosts more than 120 AI-related courses, including 11 focused specifically on Generative AI. To further streamline AI education, the “Skilling for AI Readiness” (SOAR) programme has been introduced. This nationally standardized initiative aligns with the National Skill Qualification Framework (NSQF) and provides structured learning pathways—from basic AI awareness for school students and teachers to advanced, job-oriented AI skills for the workforce.

SOAR also integrates AI applications across sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, tourism, retail, and creative industries, helping learners apply AI in real-world scenarios. The programme is implemented in collaboration with recognized awarding bodies and industry partners to ensure relevance and scalability.

As part of its broader strategy, the government plans to establish 570 Data and AI Labs nationwide, including 27 in collaboration with NIELIT and 543 across ITIs and polytechnics. These labs will support hands-on learning and practical skill development aligned with industry needs.

Standardized AI curricula are also being developed for different skill levels, covering foundational topics as well as specialized areas like data science. Additionally, the SOAR framework includes short, accessible digital courses for non-technical learners. One such course, “AI to be Aware,” is a 15-hour introductory program that includes modules on Generative AI and responsible usage.

The initiative emphasizes collaboration between government, industry, and academia to build a comprehensive and inclusive AI ecosystem, with measurable outcomes in training, course delivery, and workforce development.
