Government Clears ₹132.51-Crore Port Connectivity Project at Kandla

The project is being taken up as part of the Sagarmala Programme and is aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, both of which aim to build stronger multi-modal transport networks and improve logistics performance across the country. Construction is being executed by Western Railway on a deposit basis.

In a move aimed at easing cargo movement and improving logistics efficiency at Deendayal Port in Kandla, the government has approved a ₹132.51-crore Road Over Bridge (ROB) project at LC-235. The clearance was announced by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways on April 3, 2026, with Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal describing it as a key step in strengthening seamless port-led connectivity.

The project is being taken up as part of the Sagarmala Programme and is aligned with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, both of which aim to build stronger multi-modal transport networks and improve logistics performance across the country. Construction is being executed by Western Railway on a deposit basis.

According to the ministry, the proposed ROB is meant to remove a critical bottleneck at the port by enabling uninterrupted movement across the rail crossing. Once completed, it is expected to decongest the area, speed up cargo evacuation, and improve operational efficiency at Deendayal Port, one of India’s major maritime gateways.

Sonowal said the project reflects the government’s push to create modern, efficient and integrated port infrastructure under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s broader logistics and infrastructure agenda. He said the bridge would improve cargo movement, enhance safety and contribute to India’s ambition of emerging as a major global maritime hub.

The PIB release said the proposal had recently been examined by the Delegated Investment Board chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The revised cost was assessed to ensure that the project meets current technical specifications and safety standards.

The ministry also said all major ports have been directed to map their projects on the PM Gati Shakti portal to improve inter-agency coordination, synchronise multi-modal connectivity works, and accelerate infrastructure development nationwide.
