Indian Air Force Successfully Flight Tests Air-to-Air Astra Missile from Sukhoi-30 MKI

Astra is an indigenous Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Astra missile with a range of over 70 kms. It was successfully test-fired by IAF Sukhoi jet on Monday. The missile was launched from Su-30 MKI as a part of User trials. “The live aerial target was engaged accurately demonstrating the capability of the first indigenous air-to-air missile,” the Ministry of Defence said in a statement.

It will be powered by two General Electric LM2500 gas turbines and two MAN manufactured diesel engines. This will help the frigate achieve a top speed of 28 knots and a range of 5,500 nautical miles at a speed of 10-15 knots. It will be equipped with two long range surface to air Barak missile, surface to surface Brahmos supersonic cruise missile to deal with threats from the air. The P-17 Alpha Shivalik-class frigate, a stealth warship, has been built under the P-17 programme. Under the project, seven ships will be built by the Mazgaon Dock Limited and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers. It’s a follow-up of the first frigate built by the Mazgaon Dock Limited in the 1970s. The INS Khanderi is the second Scorpene-class attack submarine to be commissioned into the Indian Navy. The conventional diesel-electric submarine has been manufactured by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai under the Indian Navy’s P-75 programme under which six similar submarines will be manufactured.
