Indian financial technology company Decentro has introduced a new range of UPI payment Soundboxes designed to provide instant voice confirmation of digital transactions and simplify payment acceptance for merchants across India. The company has launched two devices, the Static QR Soundbox and the Dynamic QR Soundbox, combining digital payment processing, multilingual audio notifications and advanced connectivity features to support small businesses, retail establishments and commercial enterprises.
The new devices represent an expansion of Decentro’s financial technology infrastructure from software-based payment processing into physical merchant payment systems. While the Static QR Soundbox focuses on reliable UPI payment confirmations, the Dynamic QR Soundbox introduces transaction-specific QR codes, an integrated display, a keypad and near-field communication (NFC) hardware intended to support contactless card payments. Decentro is targeting the deployment of more than one million Soundboxes by the end of 2028, reflecting its ambition to expand across India’s rapidly growing digital payments ecosystem.
Static QR Soundbox Designed for Reliable Merchant Payment Confirmation
Decentro’s Static QR Soundbox has been developed for merchants requiring a compact and straightforward system to confirm incoming digital payments. The device provides immediate spoken notifications when transactions are successfully received, allowing shopkeepers and business operators to verify payments without repeatedly checking their mobile phones or banking applications.
The Soundbox supports 4G mobile connectivity, with 2G compatibility and optional Wi-Fi connectivity to improve operational reliability in locations where network availability may be inconsistent. These features are particularly relevant to smaller towns and semi-urban markets, where digital payment acceptance has expanded considerably but connectivity conditions can vary between locations.
The device also supports payment announcements in English, Hindi and multiple regional languages, allowing merchants to receive transaction information in a language familiar to them. Multilingual functionality can improve the accessibility of digital payment systems among small business owners and workers who may be less comfortable using English-language banking interfaces.
By combining QR-based payment acceptance with immediate audio confirmation, the device is intended to simplify transaction verification during busy commercial operations. The technology is relevant to neighbourhood grocery shops, roadside establishments, cafés, restaurants and other businesses processing frequent small-value transactions.
Dynamic QR Soundbox Introduces Advanced Payment Features
The Dynamic QR Soundbox provides additional payment functionality through an integrated display capable of generating a unique QR code for each transaction. Unlike static QR codes, which generally require customers to enter the payment amount manually, dynamic QR codes can incorporate the transaction amount directly into the payment request.
This approach allows merchants to generate payment requests corresponding to specific purchases, reducing the possibility of customers entering incorrect amounts. It also supports more structured transaction records and simplifies payment reconciliation for businesses handling numerous transactions throughout the day.
The device incorporates a physical keypad and NFC hardware designed to support contactless payment acceptance through RuPay, Visa and Mastercard cards. According to Decentro’s announcement, the Dynamic QR Soundbox currently supports UPI transactions, while contactless card payment functionality is expected to become operational approximately two months after the launch.
The combination of QR-code payments and planned card acceptance positions the device as a multifunctional merchant payment terminal. Its hardware design is intended to provide smaller businesses with access to payment capabilities that have traditionally required separate devices or more sophisticated point-of-sale equipment.
Decentro Targets One Million Soundbox Deployments by 2028
Decentro has outlined an ambitious expansion programme aimed at deploying more than one million Soundboxes across India by the end of 2028. The company is targeting a broad range of merchants, including grocery shops, quick-service restaurants, cafés, petrol pumps, salons and neighbourhood retail establishments.
The startup has already deployed more than 5,000 offline UPI QR codes across merchant locations, establishing an initial base for expanding its payment infrastructure. The company reported that these deployments were achieved within approximately two months of introducing its offline QR payment solution.
Decentro is also holding discussions with five potential partners concerning large-scale Soundbox deployments. Its distribution strategy involves working with banks, fintech companies, payment aggregators, marketplaces and other platforms that provide digital payment services to merchants.
Under the proposed commercial arrangements, partner organisations can distribute the devices through outright sales or rental models, depending on their business requirements. This approach provides flexibility for financial institutions and payment service providers seeking to introduce Soundbox technology across extensive merchant networks.
The company’s expansion strategy reflects the growing demand for accessible and reliable digital payment equipment, particularly among small businesses transitioning from cash-based transactions to electronic payment systems.
Integrated Connectivity and Remote Updates Support Merchant Operations
The Soundbox range has been developed with particular attention to operational simplicity and ease of maintenance. According to the company, the devices are supplied with connectivity, platform services and a one-year warranty, providing merchants with an integrated payment-confirmation solution.
Both models support over-the-air software updates, allowing new features, improvements and technical corrections to be delivered remotely. This capability reduces the need for physical service visits and enables payment service providers to maintain devices distributed across geographically dispersed locations.
Remote software management is especially valuable in smaller towns and rural markets, where obtaining specialised technical assistance may involve additional time and expense. By allowing payment devices to receive updates through their existing network connections, Decentro aims to simplify the operation of large merchant payment networks.
The company has also developed backend payment infrastructure capable of supporting transaction monitoring, digital payment processing and reconciliation services. Integration between this infrastructure and physical Soundbox devices provides an opportunity to create a more comprehensive payment technology platform for banks, merchants and financial service providers.
Supporting Digital Payments in Smaller Indian Cities
The introduction of Decentro’s Soundbox range comes amid the continued expansion of UPI payments across India’s retail economy. Digital transactions have become an increasingly common payment method among small businesses, local service providers and merchants operating outside major metropolitan centres.
Decentro’s launch announcement highlights the growing contribution of Tier-II and smaller towns to UPI transaction volumes. The company estimates that approximately 20 million merchants already use Soundbox-type devices, while India’s broader small-merchant ecosystem comprises more than 60 million businesses.
These figures indicate the substantial potential market for payment-confirmation hardware, particularly among merchants who have adopted QR-code payments but continue to depend on mobile applications for transaction verification.
Soundboxes address an important practical requirement by providing audible confirmation at the point of sale. For shopkeepers managing customers, inventory and daily business operations simultaneously, spoken payment notifications can reduce interruptions and simplify transaction processing.
The availability of regional-language support and multiple connectivity options can also make these devices more accessible to merchants operating in markets where technological familiarity and network conditions vary considerably.
Indigenous Fintech Innovation Expands Beyond Software Infrastructure
Decentro’s product launch illustrates the evolution of India’s financial technology industry from software-based payment services towards integrated solutions combining digital platforms, physical hardware and merchant-facing applications.
Founded in 2020, Decentro has developed technology infrastructure supporting payment collections, payouts, identity verification, digital onboarding and other financial services. Its systems enable businesses and financial institutions to integrate banking and payment capabilities into their applications through standardised software interfaces.
The introduction of Soundbox hardware extends this technological infrastructure directly to merchant counters, where reliable confirmation of payments is an essential component of daily commercial activity.
By combining payment processing with purpose-built hardware, Decentro is developing a wider technology offering for organisations serving India’s retail and small-business markets. The approach reflects opportunities for Indian fintech companies to build specialised products around the country’s established digital public infrastructure.
Strengthening India’s Digital Payment Ecosystem
Decentro’s Static and Dynamic QR Soundboxes represent another development in India’s expanding digital payment infrastructure, combining transaction verification, multilingual accessibility and advanced payment acceptance capabilities within compact merchant devices.
The addition of transaction-specific QR generation and planned contactless card functionality creates opportunities for merchants to accept multiple payment methods through integrated hardware. Connectivity options and remote software updates further support deployment across smaller cities, towns and geographically dispersed commercial markets.
The company’s target of deploying more than one million devices by the end of 2028 demonstrates the scale of its planned expansion. With more than 5,000 offline UPI QR deployments already reported and discussions underway with distribution partners, Decentro is extending its existing payment technology infrastructure into a new segment of merchant services.
The development highlights how Indian fintech companies are building practical applications around UPI to improve payment accessibility, transaction reliability and ease of doing business. By bringing advanced payment functionality to smaller merchants, Decentro’s new Soundbox range contributes to the continued evolution of India’s digital commerce infrastructure.
