India and the United Arab Emirates are advancing their Comprehensive Strategic Partnership through a high-level diplomatic engagement involving External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The visit, scheduled for 19–20 October 2026, focuses on strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, energy, defence, financial technology and regional connectivity.
The Ministry of External Affairs has identified the visit as an opportunity to assess progress under the India–UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and advance shared priorities.
India–UAE Strategic Partnership Expands Across Multiple Sectors
India and the UAE have developed a broad strategic relationship encompassing economic cooperation, energy security, defence, investment and emerging technologies.
The Comprehensive Strategic Partnership provides an institutional framework for sustained engagement between the two governments, encouraging cooperation across traditional and emerging sectors.
During the Mumbai engagement, the foreign ministers are expected to review initiatives involving energy, trade, investment, financial technology, defence and connectivity.
The discussions also reflect the importance of maintaining regular high-level diplomatic exchanges to strengthen bilateral cooperation and address shared regional priorities.
Bilateral Trade Reaches $100 Billion
Economic relations remain a central pillar of the India–UAE partnership, supported by the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which entered into force in May 2022.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, bilateral trade reached approximately $100 billion in 2025, making the UAE one of India’s largest trading partners.
The agreement has helped strengthen commercial engagement by improving market access and supporting trade across several sectors.
The UAE has also emerged as an important investment partner for India. Cumulative UAE foreign direct investment into India reached approximately $22.85 billion between April 2000 and 2025.
The continuing diplomatic engagement provides an opportunity to expand trade, encourage investment and deepen cooperation between businesses from both countries.
Energy Security and Renewable Energy Cooperation
Energy cooperation remains a major component of India–UAE relations, extending from conventional energy supplies to renewable energy and infrastructure development.
The UAE is an important energy partner for India, while both countries are expanding cooperation in cleaner energy technologies and sustainable development.
Discussions during the visit are expected to address opportunities for strengthening energy partnerships, including investment and technological collaboration.
The relationship is increasingly relevant as India diversifies its energy sources, expands renewable electricity generation and strengthens international energy partnerships.
Defence and Emerging Technologies on the Agenda
Defence cooperation and emerging technologies are among the important subjects identified for the bilateral discussions.
India and the UAE have established mechanisms for defence engagement, military exchanges and cooperation in areas of mutual security interest.
The two countries are also exploring opportunities involving advanced technologies, digital infrastructure and financial innovation.
Financial technology has become particularly important as India expands its digital payments ecosystem and develops international partnerships in digital financial services.
Cooperation in these sectors supports the broader objective of strengthening technological capabilities and encouraging innovation-driven economic growth.
Regional Connectivity and the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor
Connectivity is another important component of the India–UAE strategic relationship.
Both countries are participants in the proposed India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which aims to strengthen transport and economic connectivity between India, West Asia and Europe.
The corridor envisages improved integration of maritime and rail transport infrastructure, alongside opportunities for cooperation in energy and digital connectivity.
India and the UAE also cooperate through multilateral arrangements such as BRICS and the I2U2 grouping, which brings together India, Israel, the UAE and the United States.
These arrangements provide additional platforms for collaboration in infrastructure, technology, investment and regional economic development.
West Asia Developments and Regional Stability
The foreign ministers are also expected to exchange views on regional and global developments, including the evolving situation in West Asia.
The region remains strategically important to India because of its energy supplies, maritime trade routes, investment relationships and substantial Indian expatriate population.
Maintaining stability in West Asia is essential for protecting commercial connectivity, energy security and the welfare of Indian citizens living and working in Gulf countries.
India and the UAE maintain regular diplomatic consultations on regional developments, reflecting their shared interest in stability and economic cooperation.
Strengthening India–UAE Relations Through Continued Engagement
The latest diplomatic engagement reflects the expanding scope of India–UAE relations, which now extend well beyond conventional energy trade into advanced manufacturing, financial technology, defence, investment and international connectivity.
The UAE’s position as a major commercial and investment partner, combined with India’s expanding industrial and technological capabilities, provides a strong foundation for continued cooperation.
The Mumbai discussions will reinforce regular ministerial engagement and help advance initiatives identified under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
The continuing cooperation between India and the UAE strengthens one of India’s most important partnerships in West Asia, supporting greater economic integration, technological collaboration and regional stability.
