India and Poland Expand Strategic Cooperation

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk to Visit India from October 21–23

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Tusk will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on 22 October. The two leaders will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk will undertake a three-day official visit to India from 21 to 23 October 2026, at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The visit will focus on strengthening the India–Poland Strategic Partnership, expanding bilateral trade and investment, and advancing cooperation in defence, emerging technologies, renewable energy and education.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Tusk will hold bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi on 22 October. The two leaders will review the full spectrum of bilateral relations and exchange views on regional and global developments of mutual interest.

The visit follows the elevation of India–Poland relations to a Strategic Partnership in August 2024, during Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Warsaw. It also reflects the growing importance of Poland as India’s economic and strategic partner in Central Europe.

Bilateral Talks to Review India–Poland Strategic Partnership

The upcoming meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Tusk will provide an opportunity to assess progress in bilateral cooperation since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership in 2024.

Both countries have identified trade, investment, defence cooperation, emerging technologies, renewable energy, education and cultural exchanges as important areas for strengthening relations.

The discussions will also cover international and regional developments, reflecting the growing diplomatic engagement between India and Poland.

Prime Minister Modi’s August 2024 visit to Poland was the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 45 years. During that visit, both governments adopted a framework for expanding political, economic and strategic cooperation.

The forthcoming meeting in New Delhi will build upon that diplomatic engagement and advance the implementation of shared priorities.

Polish Business Delegation to Visit New Delhi and Bengaluru

Prime Minister Tusk will be accompanied by Andrzej Domański, Poland’s Minister of Finance and Economy, along with a large business delegation.

An India–Poland Business Forum will be organised in New Delhi on 22 October, followed by another business forum in Bengaluru on 23 October.

Tusk will also visit Bengaluru to engage with Indian business representatives, including companies operating in the information technology and space sectors.

The business engagements are expected to encourage stronger commercial partnerships, investment opportunities and technological cooperation between companies from both countries.

Poland’s position within the European Union and India’s expanding manufacturing and technology sectors provide a foundation for developing stronger industrial and commercial relationships.

Defence, Emerging Technologies and Renewable Energy Cooperation

Defence cooperation and emerging technologies will feature among the important areas of bilateral engagement during the visit.

India and Poland have identified opportunities to expand collaboration in defence industries, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and research-driven sectors.

Renewable energy is another priority, particularly as both countries work towards modernising energy infrastructure and expanding cleaner sources of electricity.

Cooperation in information technology, space applications and innovation also offers opportunities for Indian and Polish companies to develop commercial partnerships and exchange technical expertise.

These areas reflect the increasingly diversified nature of India–Poland relations, extending cooperation beyond conventional trade into advanced industrial and technological sectors.

Expanding India–Poland Trade and Investment

Economic cooperation has emerged as an important component of the bilateral relationship, supported by growing commercial engagement and investments in manufacturing, technology and services.

Several Polish companies operate in India across sectors such as industrial packaging, healthcare products, engineering and environmental technologies. Indian businesses have also established a presence in Poland, particularly in information technology, manufacturing and other commercial activities.

The seventh session of the India–Poland Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation, held in New Delhi on 14 July 2026, reviewed opportunities in trade and investment, information technology, mining, renewable energy, pharmaceuticals, defence, space and advanced manufacturing.

The forthcoming business forums in New Delhi and Bengaluru will provide additional opportunities for companies from both countries to explore commercial partnerships.

Strengthening India–European Union Relations

Prime Minister Tusk’s visit also holds significance for India’s broader engagement with the European Union.

As an EU member state, Poland plays an important role in Central European economic and political affairs. Stronger bilateral relations can support India’s efforts to expand commercial and technological partnerships across Europe.

The Ministry of External Affairs has emphasised that the visit will contribute to strengthening the India–EU Strategic Partnership.

Tusk has longstanding experience in European affairs, having previously served as President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019. He visited New Delhi in 2017 in that capacity for the India–EU Summit.

His forthcoming visit will be his second to India as Poland’s Prime Minister, following an earlier visit in 2010.

Education, Culture and People-to-People Connections

India and Poland also share historical and cultural connections that continue to support their bilateral relationship.

During the Second World War, Poland’s wartime refugees, including children, received shelter in India. Maharaja Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja of Nawanagar is remembered in Poland for providing refuge to Polish children, an enduring symbol of friendship between the two countries.

Education, academic exchanges and cultural cooperation remain important elements of bilateral engagement.

Both governments have identified opportunities to encourage closer institutional cooperation, educational exchanges and stronger connections between their citizens.

These relationships provide a valuable foundation for expanding bilateral cooperation beyond government-level engagements.

A New Phase in India–Poland Relations

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s visit comes at an important stage in the development of India–Poland relations, two years after their elevation to a Strategic Partnership.

The scheduled bilateral discussions, business forums and industry engagements underline the importance both governments attach to strengthening economic, technological and strategic cooperation.

With engagements planned in New Delhi and Bengaluru, the visit will bring together political leadership and business communities to advance practical cooperation across multiple sectors.

The three-day visit is set to reinforce India–Poland relations while creating fresh opportunities for trade, investment, technological collaboration and deeper engagement between India and the European Union.
