India Sends 60-Member Armed Forces Contingent to Kazakhstan for KAZIND-2026

A 60-member Indian Armed Forces contingent has departed for Oskemen in Kazakhstan to participate in the ninth edition of the India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2026, scheduled from September 28 to October 11, 2026.

The exercise will focus on joint counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain, with training covering air mobility, unmanned aerial systems, counter-UAS capabilities and Special Heliborne Operations.

Garhwal Rifles Form Core of Indian Contingent

The Indian contingent is drawn mainly from a battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, with additional personnel from other arms and services of the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force.

Kazakhstan will field a contingent of comparable strength, consisting primarily of personnel from its Land Forces.

The joint composition is intended to improve coordination between the two militaries while exposing participating troops to each other’s operational procedures and tactical experience.

Counter-Terrorism Operations Form Central Training Theme

KAZIND-2026 is designed to strengthen the ability of Indian and Kazakh forces to conduct joint counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment under a United Nations mandate.

Training will include responses to terrorist actions, raids, search-and-destroy missions and cordon-and-search operations.

The participating forces will also practise securing helipads and landing sites, allowing ground and air elements to operate together during fast-moving tactical situations.

Special Heliborne Operations and Air Mobility Included

Special Heliborne Operations will form an important part of the exercise.

Such operations involve the rapid insertion or extraction of troops by helicopters, allowing forces to reach difficult or tactically important locations with greater speed.

The involvement of Indian Air Force personnel will support the air-mobility component of KAZIND-2026 and improve coordination between ground troops and aviation elements.

Drones and Counter-UAS Systems Enter Training Programme

The ninth edition of KAZIND will also include the integrated employment of Unmanned Aerial Systems and Counter-UAS capabilities.

Drones have become an important element of modern battlefield surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting, while counter-drone systems are increasingly essential for protecting troops and sensitive locations.

Their inclusion reflects the changing character of contemporary military operations and adds a technology-intensive dimension to the bilateral exercise.

Joint Command Post and Surveillance Centre to Be Established

India and Kazakhstan will establish a Joint Command Post and an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre during the exercise.

These facilities will support coordinated planning, intelligence sharing and execution of joint missions by the participating forces.

The command structure will also allow both contingents to practise decision-making and information flow in a combined operational environment.

Exercise to Culminate in Validation Against Simulated Threat

The training phase will conclude with a comprehensive validation exercise in which both contingents will apply the tactics, techniques and procedures practised during KAZIND-2026.

The final phase will involve a simulated terrorist threat, allowing participating troops to combine ground manoeuvres, intelligence, surveillance, air mobility and specialised operations in a single coordinated scenario.

This will provide both forces with an opportunity to assess interoperability under realistic operational conditions.

KAZIND Strengthens India-Kazakhstan Military Cooperation

Exercise KAZIND has developed into an important platform for professional interaction between the armed forces of India and Kazakhstan.

The 2026 edition combines conventional infantry skills with air mobility, drone operations, counter-UAS systems and intelligence coordination, reflecting the increasingly complex demands placed on modern forces.

Through sustained joint training and exchange of operational experience, KAZIND-2026 is strengthening military-to-military cooperation and reinforcing the broader India-Kazakhstan strategic partnership.
