India’s private-sector role in missile manufacturing is set to deepen, with Bharat Dynamics Limited identifying Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Company as a strategic domestic partner across weapons, missiles, launchers, ground systems and advanced propulsion engines.
The expanded scope was disclosed in BDL’s FY2025-26 Annual Report, published on September 2, 2026. Under its section on global and domestic collaborative alliances, the Defence PSU says it is combining capabilities with Godrej for current and future Indian as well as export programmes involving these systems.
The disclosure is important because it points to cooperation considerably broader than the manufacture of isolated components. BDL is India’s principal production agency for numerous guided missile and allied weapon programmes and has been progressively transforming itself from a missile manufacturer into a complete weapon-system integrator.
Godrej, meanwhile, has accumulated decades of experience in precision engineering for strategic programmes. Its defence engineering business has previously manufactured BrahMos missile launchers, missile carriers and naval systems, giving it experience with the heavy mechanical structures, precision assemblies and ground equipment associated with complete weapon systems.
Its aerospace division brings another capability particularly relevant to BDL’s reference to advanced propulsion.
Godrej Aerospace has manufactured complex propulsion hardware for both space and defence applications. The company has supplied liquid-propulsion engines and engine components for ISRO programmes and has manufactured more than 175 engines and related systems for India’s launch vehicles.
It has also moved into military aero-engine production. Godrej became the first Indian private company selected to manufacture eight modules of a DRDO turbojet engine, opening a route into propulsion systems intended for aerial applications.
More recently, Godrej said it had developed the capability to manufacture all major modules of an aero engine and is expanding its aerospace manufacturing infrastructure through a new 100-acre complex at Khalapur in Maharashtra. The company is investing further in design, R&D, digital manufacturing and integrated aerospace systems.
Those capabilities make the reference to BDL–Godrej cooperation on advanced propulsion engines particularly noteworthy.
BDL itself is moving into several new propulsion-related areas. Its current corporate roadmap includes cruise-missile engines, advanced propellants, guided bombs, drone-delivered payloads and specialised warheads, while more than 40 defence projects are under development with DRDO and other partners.
The company is simultaneously expanding its manufacturing footprint. New facilities at Ibrahimpatnam near Hyderabad, Amravati in Maharashtra and Jhansi in Uttar Pradesh are intended to support surface-to-air missiles, next-generation missile systems, VSHORADS, rockets and propellants for anti-tank guided missiles.
Godrej’s combination of propulsion manufacturing, complex machining and launcher expertise therefore fits directly into BDL’s attempt to create a deeper domestic industrial base around future missile programmes.
The partnership could potentially span several layers of a weapon system: precision missile structures, launch mechanisms, ground-support equipment, propulsion modules and other highly engineered assemblies. BDL’s annual report does not identify the individual missile programmes assigned to Godrej, so specific systems should not yet be attributed to the partnership.
The export reference is also significant.
BDL says it has executed more than 80 MoUs with Indian and foreign partners while increasing its focus on Friendly Foreign Countries. Akash and other BDL weapon systems are being promoted internationally, meaning domestic suppliers capable of producing critical subsystems could eventually become part of export production chains as well.
The arrangement also illustrates how India’s missile sector is changing. Major Defence PSUs increasingly act as system integrators while specialised private companies manufacture complex propulsion hardware, structures, electronics and launch equipment. This allows production capacity to expand without concentrating every manufacturing process within a single government facility.
For Godrej, the BDL relationship extends an already substantial strategic-manufacturing portfolio further into complete missile ecosystems. For BDL, Godrej provides an established Indian partner capable of producing some of the mechanically and metallurgically demanding hardware required for advanced weapons.
The September disclosure should therefore not be interpreted as a newly signed agreement on one particular missile. It is more significant as a formal indication that BDL and Godrej are building a broader long-term industrial relationship covering present and future weapons, missiles, launchers, ground systems and propulsion programmes.
As BDL expands into new missile families, cruise-missile propulsion, rockets and export programmes, Godrej’s role could consequently grow from precision-component supplier toward a deeper manufacturing partner within India’s indigenous missile-production ecosystem.
