Government Extends National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Applications to September 30

The Ministry of Education has extended the application deadline for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, or NMMSS, for the 2026-27 academic year to September 30, 2026, giving selected students an additional month to complete their applications through the National Scholarship Portal.

The previous deadline had been August 31. The extension applies to eligible students submitting applications under the scheme, which provides financial assistance to meritorious children from economically weaker families and is intended to reduce school dropouts after Class VIII.

Under NMMSS, the Central Government awards one lakh fresh scholarships every year to selected Class IX students, with eligible recipients able to renew the scholarship through Classes X, XI and XII subject to academic-performance and other prescribed conditions.

Each scholarship is worth ₹12,000 per student annually, effectively providing financial assistance of ₹1,000 per month.

New Application and Verification Deadlines

The Ministry has revised not only the student application deadline but also the subsequent verification schedule.

The updated timetable for the 2026-27 scholarship cycle is:

Applications for the current cycle opened on the National Scholarship Portal on June 1, 2026.

For 2026-27, selected students are required first to complete One-Time Registration, or OTR, on the National Scholarship Portal. After completing OTR, they can apply for the relevant scholarship scheme through the portal.

One Lakh Fresh Scholarships Every Year

NMMSS is one of the Central Government’s principal school-level scholarship programmes aimed specifically at students from economically weaker families.

Every year, 100,000 fresh scholarships are awarded to eligible Class IX students selected through examinations conducted by the respective State and Union Territory governments.

Once selected, a student can continue receiving the scholarship during Classes X, XI and XII, provided the required academic and eligibility conditions are maintained.

This means an eligible student who receives the scholarship continuously from Class IX through Class XII can potentially receive assistance for four years.

At ₹12,000 annually, this represents a maximum scholarship support of ₹48,000 over Classes IX to XII, subject to continued eligibility and successful renewal each year.

Designed to Prevent Dropouts After Class VIII

The central objective of NMMSS is to address one of the most important transition points in Indian school education—the movement from the elementary stage into secondary education.

Students from financially vulnerable households can face greater pressure to leave school after completing Class VIII because of family income requirements, transportation expenses and other educational costs.

The scholarship seeks to provide an incentive for academically capable students to remain in school and continue their education through the higher-secondary stage.

The Ministry of Education describes the scheme as an intervention designed to reduce dropouts after Class VIII and encourage students from economically weaker sections to complete schooling through Class XII.

Who Can Receive NMMSS?

The scholarship is targeted at meritorious students from lower-income households rather than being a universal benefit.

Under the scheme’s eligibility conditions, the annual parental income from all sources must not exceed ₹3.50 lakh.

Students must also have obtained at least 55% marks or an equivalent grade in Class VII to appear for the selection examination. A relaxation of five percentage points is available for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students.

The scholarship is intended for regular students studying in:

• State Government schools
• Government-aided schools
• Local body schools

Students studying in private schools are not covered under the scheme. Students of Kendriya Vidyalayas, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas and certain residential schools where boarding, lodging and education are provided by government institutions are also excluded under the prescribed guidelines.

Reservation of scholarships is implemented according to the norms applicable within individual States and Union Territories.

Selection Takes Place Through State and UT Examinations

Students do not receive the NMMSS scholarship merely by applying on the National Scholarship Portal.

Each State and Union Territory conducts its own examination for selecting fresh scholarship recipients, normally while students are studying in Class VIII.

The examination comprises two principal components: the Mental Ability Test, or MAT, and the Scholastic Aptitude Test, or SAT.

The Mental Ability Test assesses areas such as reasoning, classification, numerical patterns, analogy and critical-thinking ability.

The Scholastic Aptitude Test evaluates students in subjects including science, mathematics and social studies based broadly on the curriculum studied during Classes VII and VIII.

The scholarship is therefore simultaneously means-based and merit-based: household income determines financial eligibility, while performance in the selection examination determines merit.

Scholarship Begins in Class IX

Students selected through the State or Union Territory examination become eligible for the fresh scholarship when they enter Class IX.

The National Scholarship Portal subsequently becomes the principal platform for processing fresh and renewal applications.

For the 2026-27 academic year, students who have already been selected are required to complete their OTR and submit the appropriate application through NSP by September 30.

The scholarship amount is transferred electronically to the bank accounts of beneficiaries through the Public Financial Management System under Direct Benefit Transfer.

This digital system is intended to reduce intermediaries and ensure that the scholarship reaches the student’s registered bank account directly.

Renewal Available Until Class XII

NMMSS is structured as a continuing school-support programme rather than a one-time award.

Students receiving a fresh scholarship in Class IX can seek renewal in Classes X, XI and XII, subject to meeting the scheme’s academic requirements.

According to the Ministry’s guidelines, beneficiaries are expected to maintain satisfactory academic performance and progress to the next class according to the prescribed conditions.

For continuation beyond Class X, scholarship recipients are generally required to obtain at least 60% marks in Class X, with a five-percentage-point relaxation for SC and ST students.

Clear promotion through the relevant classes is also required for continued renewal.

The renewal mechanism ensures that government support can follow a student through much of secondary and higher-secondary education rather than ending after the first year.

National Scholarship Portal Centralises the Process

The National Scholarship Portal serves as the Government of India’s central digital platform for NMMSS applications and several other scholarship programmes.

Applications under NMMSS undergo two levels of verification before final processing.

At Level 1, the Institute Nodal Officer verifies the student’s application and institutional information. For the current cycle, this stage must be completed by October 15.

The application then proceeds to Level 2 verification by the District Nodal Officer, for which the revised deadline is October 31.

These verification stages are designed to confirm student eligibility and minimise errors or duplication before scholarship funds are sanctioned.

New Flexibility From 2026-27

The 2026-27 scholarship cycle also introduces an important change in how students can combine different forms of financial assistance.

The Ministry of Education announced in August that, beginning this academic year, eligible students may apply simultaneously for one merit-based scholarship and one or more welfare-based scholarship schemes, provided they satisfy the respective eligibility conditions.

This could expand the overall assistance available to students from disadvantaged backgrounds where different schemes address separate educational or social objectives.

The change makes coordination through the National Scholarship Portal increasingly important as multiple government scholarship programmes become digitally integrated.

Financial Support at a Critical Stage of Education

Although ₹12,000 annually is relatively modest compared with higher-education scholarships, its impact can be more substantial for school students from economically vulnerable families.

Secondary-school education can involve recurring expenses for books, uniforms, transport, examinations, learning materials and other necessities.

For households close to the scheme’s income threshold—or significantly below it—the scholarship can help offset some of these costs at precisely the stage when financial pressures might otherwise encourage a student to leave school.

The fact that the assistance can continue for four academic years also makes NMMSS different from awards that provide only a single payment.

Students Now Have Until September 30

The latest extension provides selected students with another opportunity to complete their applications if they were unable to meet the original August 31 deadline.

Students applying for NMMSS for 2026-27 should therefore complete their One-Time Registration and scholarship application through the National Scholarship Portal before September 30, 2026, rather than waiting for the verification period that follows.

Institute Nodal Officers will then have until October 15 to complete Level-1 verification, while District Nodal Officers will have until October 31 for Level-2 verification.

With one lakh new scholarships available annually and renewals extending through Class XII, the scheme remains an important component of India’s effort to ensure that academic ability is not interrupted by financial hardship during the transition from elementary to secondary education.
