India has successfully conducted the flight-trial of an advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island in Odisha, marking a major milestone in the country’s strategic missile capability enhancement programme.
The missile was tested with multiple payloads aimed at different targets spread across a vast geographical region in the Indian Ocean Region. According to the Ministry of Defence, the trial demonstrated India’s capability to engage multiple strategic targets using a single missile system.
Officials stated that the missile’s trajectory and mission performance were tracked through multiple ground-based and ship-based telemetry systems. Flight data confirmed that all mission objectives were successfully achieved during the test.
The advanced missile system has been developed by laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organisation with support from domestic defence industries, reflecting the country’s growing indigenous missile development ecosystem. Senior scientists from DRDO and personnel from the Indian Army witnessed the successful trial.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, the Indian Army and Indian industry for the successful test, stating that the capability would significantly strengthen India’s defence preparedness amid evolving strategic and security challenges.
