ICGS ACHAL Commissions in Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard has strengthened its maritime surveillance and coastal security capabilities with the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Achal, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel of the Adamya-class series, at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa on Friday. The induction of the vessel marks another major step in India’s expanding maritime defence infrastructure and indigenous shipbuilding programme.

Named Achal, meaning “firm” or “steadfast”, the vessel has been designed to undertake a broad range of operational duties, including coastal and offshore surveillance, maritime interdiction, search and rescue missions, anti-smuggling operations, and marine pollution response. Officials said the ship will significantly enhance the operational readiness of the Indian Coast Guard across India’s maritime zones.

The vessel was formally commissioned by A. Anbarasu, Additional Secretary and Director General (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence, in the presence of Inspector General Tekur Sashi Kumar, Commander of Coast Guard Region (North-West), along with senior officials from the Central and State Governments and representatives of Goa Shipyard Limited.

Built indigenously by Goa Shipyard Limited, ICGS Achal incorporates more than 50 per cent indigenous components, reflecting India’s growing capabilities in domestic defence manufacturing. The project aligns closely with the Government of India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives aimed at reducing dependence on foreign defence platforms and boosting local industrial capacity.

Defence officials stated that the commissioning of ICGS Achal is part of the Indian Coast Guard’s ongoing fleet expansion programme intended to strengthen maritime domain awareness, improve coastal security, and support rapid-response operations in India’s vast maritime region.
