The Indian Air Force on Wednesday carried out a major take-off and landing exercise on the Purvanchal Expressway in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh, using the Arval-Kiri Karwat emergency airstrip as part of a preparedness drill designed to test highway-based air operations.
The exercise featured a mix of frontline combat and transport aircraft, including the Jaguar, Sukhoi, Mirage, Tejas, and C-295, showcasing coordinated take-offs and landings under operational conditions. Around 12 kilometres of the expressway were closed for the drill, and traffic was diverted during the operation.
Officials said the exercise was aimed at assessing the expressway’s ability to serve as an alternative runway during wartime or national emergencies, underlining India’s increasing emphasis on dual-use infrastructure that can support both civilian connectivity and defence readiness.
The administration also described the event as strategically significant for the region, saying it adds to the national importance of the area while demonstrating how critical transport corridors can be integrated into military contingency planning.
