India has secured all four seats it contested in elections to bodies linked to the United Nations Economic and Social Council, marking a notable diplomatic success at the multilateral level. According to News On AIR, the elections were held at UN headquarters and India was elected unopposed in all four cases, with the process carried out by acclamation, reflecting unanimous backing from member states.
Among the key outcomes, former senior diplomat Preeti Saran was re-elected in her personal capacity to the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. India also won seats in the Commission on Science and Technology for Development, the Committee on Non-Governmental Organisations, and the Committee for Programme and Coordination. Together, these positions strengthen India’s voice across important UN-linked platforms dealing with development, civil society engagement, programme oversight and socio-economic issues.
Preeti Saran’s re-election adds a further layer of significance to the outcome. News On AIR noted that she had chaired a session of the Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights last year. A former Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs, she has had a 36-year career in the Indian Foreign Service and has served in Vietnam as well as in diplomatic assignments in Toronto, Geneva, Dhaka, Cairo and Moscow.
The sweep is likely to be viewed as a sign of India’s continued credibility in multilateral diplomacy, especially at a time when representation in UN bodies carries growing importance in shaping global discussions on development, governance and international coordination. The fact that all four elections were uncontested makes the result politically more striking, as it suggests broad support rather than a narrowly won contest. That last point is an inference from the reported uncontested, by-acclamation outcome.
