It isn’t just going to be one big moment– the speech at the United Nations General Assembly — on September 27, it’s going to be a big week for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
It will all begin in Texas, with HOWDY MODI, which is being planned as the biggest meeting of Non-Resident Indians and People of Indian Origin (PIO) by the Prime Minister on September 22, a day after he lands in the United States.
As a high-level government official said, it will be “bigger than any meeting by Modi outside India”.
After getting to New York, that night or the next morning, he first participates in the UN Climate Summit on September 23. India will play a big role in being one of the leaders of the International Solar Alliance.
The Bloomberg Business Forum is the next day, and here, for Modi, Make in India could be an issue. On September 25, there is a seminar on Gandhi and Climate Change and also, an award by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It’s the Global Goalkeeper of the Year Award for the work on the Swacch Bharat Initiative.
September 26 has largely been kept aside for bilateral meetings, not with G-7 or G-20 countries, but many of the others.
He has already met US President Donald Trump in Biarritz, France and President Emmanuel Macron and other leaders on the sidelines of the G-7 meeting. So, it will be an opportunity to meet leaders of other countries.
The grand finale of sorts will be his speech at the UNGA, and the PM is returning to New York after some years. It is a big moment: after the abrogation of Article 370 and strong support at the UN Security Council, the PM’s speech will be much awaited.
Just what he will say isn’t clear as yet, but he is expected to counter everything Pakistan has said in recent days about Jammu and Kashmir. Cross-border terrorism could also be brought up.
