India has assigned Sujal Gaon IDs to 12,67,808 rural habitations, covering about 75% of the country’s 16,96,213 habitations, as the Jal Jeevan Mission expands digital monitoring of rural drinking water services.
According to the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the figures are current as of August 10, 2026. The Sujal Gaon ID is a unique digital identification number issued under the monitoring framework of Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0.
The ID is assigned to water supply service areas that meet prescribed standards under the Mission. It allows authorities to systematically identify, monitor, track and verify rural habitations that achieve targeted drinking water service outcomes.
The initiative is being supported by Sujalam Bharat, a federated Digital Public Infrastructure platform developed under the Jal Jeevan Mission. It is designed for lifecycle-based management of Rural Piped Water Supply Schemes.
Sujalam Bharat combines digital asset registries, geospatial mapping and decision-support systems. It has also been integrated with the PM GatiShakti platform, creating a GIS-validated framework for monitoring rural water infrastructure. Individual water supply schemes are assigned separate Sujalam Bharat IDs.
While Sujal Gaon IDs identify water service areas, Sujalam Bharat IDs provide unique digital identities to individual rural water supply schemes. Together, the two systems enable authorities to map infrastructure from the water source to the household tap.
The digital framework can also help track assets, identify infrastructure gaps, prevent duplication and improve operation and maintenance. The government expects the system to strengthen transparency, planning and accountability while supporting more data-driven management of rural drinking water infrastructure.
