More than 26,000 applications from across India have marked the successful conclusion of the inaugural edition of Vande Bharatam, a nationwide initiative launched by Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani to identify and support entrepreneurs, innovators and problem-solvers beyond the country’s traditional startup hubs.
The initiative, which culminated in a Grand Finale in Ahmedabad around Independence Day, received participation from all 36 States and Union Territories and more than 800 districts, highlighting the breadth of entrepreneurial activity emerging from India’s cities, towns and rural communities.
Gautam Adani said the response to the first edition demonstrated the depth of talent available across the country, particularly among young founders, women entrepreneurs, rural innovators and problem-solvers from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities.
“The first edition of Vande Bharatam is over. For me, on this Independence Day there is no better reminder of what India is capable of,” Adani said in a post on X.
He said the large response showed that India’s next generation of entrepreneurs was already emerging across the country and needed greater access to opportunities, mentorship and platforms.
Bringing grassroots innovators into the national spotlight
Vande Bharatam was launched in June with the objective of expanding entrepreneurial opportunities beyond established startup centres. The programme was designed to reach all 36 States and Union Territories and more than 800 districts, allowing participants from diverse backgrounds and geographies to showcase their ideas.
The initiative was open to people across age groups, professions and educational backgrounds. Participants could enter with an idea, prototype, early-stage venture or an established business, without necessarily having a registered startup.
Applications were invited across sectors including technology, manufacturing, sustainability, agriculture, traditional crafts and community-led solutions. The programme also sought to encourage participation from women entrepreneurs, rural innovators, tribal entrepreneurs, persons with disabilities and other community-based changemakers.
Mentorship and industry access for selected innovators
The initiative featured a multi-stage selection process leading to a group of 75 national finalists. The finalists were brought to Ahmedabad for an immersive programme involving mentorship, industry interactions and engagement with investors and business leaders.
The platform was designed not merely to identify promising ideas but also to help participants develop the capabilities and networks required to turn those ideas into scalable ventures.
The Grand Finale brought the selected innovators onto a national platform and provided opportunities for continued engagement with mentors, investors, industry leaders and fellow entrepreneurs.
Focus on India beyond major startup hubs
Vande Bharatam has positioned grassroots entrepreneurship as an important part of India’s broader innovation ecosystem. The initiative’s organisers have pointed to the concentration of startup founders in a small number of major cities as an indication of the need to expand access to entrepreneurial networks and resources.
By reaching smaller cities, towns and villages, the programme seeks to identify talent that may otherwise remain outside the established startup ecosystem.
The initiative’s official launch announcement said expanding participation in entrepreneurship and innovation would be important for economic growth, job creation and solving local challenges as India works towards its Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
A platform for the next generation
The strong response to the first edition has reinforced the case for creating broader pathways for entrepreneurs from across India. With more than 26,000 applications and representation from every State and Union Territory, Vande Bharatam has brought attention to the scale and diversity of entrepreneurial ambition beyond India’s established business centres.
The initiative’s official platform describes Vande Bharatam as a grassroots innovation movement focused on discovering local talent and supporting solutions for India’s unique challenges.
The first edition’s conclusion on the eve of Independence Day has also given the initiative a wider national-development context, with entrepreneurship, innovation and self-reliance emerging as central themes in India’s economic transformation.
