India’s Tejas Mk2 fighter programme has received a clearer development timeline, with Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh stating that the first prototype is expected to fly between June and September 2027. The announcement comes as the aircraft moves from structural assembly towards full systems integration and ground testing.
The Tejas Mk2, also known as the Medium Weight Fighter, is being developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited as a major development and production partner. It is intended to provide the Indian Air Force with a more powerful indigenous fighter positioned above the Tejas Mk1A in range, payload and performance.
First Prototype Airframe Takes Shape
HAL Chairman and Managing Director Ravi K has confirmed that the front, centre and rear fuselage sections of the first Tejas Mk2 prototype have been joined, completing the main structural assembly of the aircraft.
The programme is now progressing towards the installation and integration of avionics, flight-control systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems and other equipment required before ground trials can begin.
HAL is targeting the first ground run around March 2027. This will precede taxi trials, system validation and flight-clearance activities ahead of the maiden flight.
Maiden Flight Targeted Between June and September 2027
Speaking at the NDTV Defence Summit on September 27, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh indicated that Tejas Mk2 prototype flight testing is expected to begin during the June-September 2027 period.
The timeline provides one of the clearest recent government-level indications of when the aircraft is expected to enter flight testing. September 2027 currently represents the outer end of the stated target window, although development schedules for prototype aircraft can change as ground testing progresses.
The March milestone sometimes reported as a Tejas Mk2 “flight date” refers instead to the planned ground-run and rollout phase. The maiden flight is expected several months later.
GE F414 Engine to Power the Tejas Mk2
The Tejas Mk2 will use the GE Aerospace F414 engine, providing substantially greater thrust than the F404 engine powering the Tejas Mk1 and Mk1A.
India already has F414 engines available for development prototypes. HAL and GE Aerospace are also working towards an agreement for manufacturing the engine in India with extensive technology transfer.
HAL has stated that technical issues connected with the proposed local-production arrangement have been resolved and that the next stage depends on completing commercial negotiations.
A Larger Fighter Than the Tejas Mk1A
The Tejas Mk2 is considerably larger than the Mk1A and incorporates a redesigned airframe with close-coupled canards, increased internal fuel capacity and a higher weapons payload.
The aircraft is being developed with advanced avionics, an Active Electronically Scanned Array radar, integrated electronic warfare systems, modern cockpit displays and compatibility with a wider range of air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons.
Its greater range and payload are intended to allow it to undertake missions currently performed by heavier fighters while retaining the advantages of an indigenous single-engine platform.
Designed for the IAF’s Medium-Weight Fighter Requirement
The Tejas Mk2 is expected to play an important role in the gradual replacement of older Indian Air Force fleets such as the Jaguar, Mirage 2000 and MiG-29 as these aircraft approach retirement.
The programme therefore occupies a crucial position between the Tejas Mk1A and India’s future fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft.
Successful ground testing in 2027 followed by the first flight would move the Tejas Mk2 into its flight-development phase, where multiple prototypes will be used to validate aerodynamics, flight controls, mission systems and weapons integration.
With the first prototype airframe assembled and a ground-run target now set for March 2027, the Tejas Mk2 programme is entering one of its most important development stages. The targeted maiden flight by September 2027 would mark the transition of India’s next indigenous fighter from the factory floor to active flight testing.
