‘Nal se Jal’ Scheme: Water, Sanitation May Attract ₹ 6.3L Crore Investment in Next 5 Years

With the introduction of ‘Nal se Jal’ scheme, water and sanitation sector is probably going to invest in this new scheme worth Rs 6.3 lakh crore (US$ 87.57 billion) in the next five years.

The administration’s new ‘Nal se Jal’ scheme, which intends to give piped water association to every household unit by 2024, will probably prompt a huge jump in the investment in water and sanitation sector.

The investments will be made in the various verticals such as pipes, EPC, water treatment pumps and valves, cement, among others. In water and sanitation and interactions with water-related policy specialists indicate per capita investment spending could run around Rs 8,000-9,000 for providing piped water access. This would add up to the spending of at least Rs 5.6 trillion-6.3 trillion over FY2020-2025, and would be almost double of the spending on water and sanitation in FY2019.

In the Union Budget 2019-2020, the Jal Shakti Ministry, which is executing the government’s central goal to give clean and piped drinking water to each household in country, has reserved Rs 28,261.59 crore (US$ 3.92 billion) for the scheme.

The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation and Ministry of Water Resources and Ganga Rejuvenation have been converged into the Jal Shakti Ministry.
