Goa Shipyard Hands Over Indigenous Fast Patrol Vessel ICGS Ajit to Indian Coast Guard

Goa Shipyard Limited has handed over ICGS Ajit, a new-generation Fast Patrol Vessel, to the Indian Coast Guard, strengthening the service’s coastal surveillance and maritime security capabilities. The vessel has been built with more than 65 per cent indigenous content, reflecting the growing role of domestic shipbuilding in India’s defence modernisation programme.

The 51.43-metre-long vessel has a displacement of about 330 tonnes and is powered by twin marine diesel engines connected to controllable pitch propellers. The propulsion arrangement, introduced for the first time in this class of Fast Patrol Vessels, is designed to improve fuel efficiency, manoeuvrability and operational performance. ICGS Ajit can achieve speeds exceeding 27 knots and has an endurance of around 1,500 nautical miles.

The vessel is equipped with an integrated machinery control system and will operate with a complement of six officers and 35 sailors. It has been designed for a wide range of missions, including Exclusive Economic Zone surveillance, fisheries protection, coastal patrols, anti-smuggling and anti-piracy operations, as well as search-and-rescue duties.

The addition of ICGS Ajit will enhance the Coast Guard’s ability to maintain sustained presence across India’s coastal and offshore waters while supporting faster responses to maritime security incidents. Its delivery also marks another step in Goa Shipyard Limited’s expanding contribution to indigenous defence shipbuilding under the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
